Why are slasher movies so popular?

Considering the number of Halloween, Nightmare on Elm street, et al type movies that have been made this genre is very popular. But I do not understand why anyone would want to see a movie based on people getting gruesomely tortured and murdered. Can you fans of this type of movie explain the appeal to me?

Thanks

Because the genre is a brilliant metaphor for the destructive effects of STDs. Abstinence is cool, kids!

The slasher film is a genre that's been played out. It's been replaced by horror/suspense films (Sixth Sense, Event Horizon, etc..)........

I used to like them when I was young. But you grow up, happen to watch one of your 'favorites' and think 'Wow, this is the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. How did I ever think this was cool?'

Pretty soon, that's how you feel about them all.

As a kid I grew up watching them, but the direct they have taken in the reent years makes me shy away from them. Jason X is a perfect example :)
