why are silencers (guns) illegal?

If a gun company builds a gun with a built in silencer will it be legal or are they banned from making guns that are quiet?

The reason I am asking is I would love to shoot in my backyard (rural area) but I am always conscious about irritating my neighbors due to the noise.

Sounds pretty illegal to me (although I'm no lawyer). Normally you'd want a silent gun if you didn't want to know you are shooting it (duh), but in a lot of cases, that means you are doing something illegal anyways. Seems pretty straight forward to me, I doubt many people are in your situation.

Get a BB gun.

you can put an oil filter over the end of the gun and it will absorb a lot of the noise... my roommates used to do it shootin their .22s

Silencers don't make a gun as quiet as they do in the movies. They make them quietER but you can still hear it. Especally if the ammo is supersonic. (which many rifle rounds are). If you want something quiet look into .22 shorts, like Remington's CBee ammunition that's about as loud as popcorn. They can still be fired in most non-semi-auto .22 firearms.

They are generally illegal, though you can get permits for supressed and full auto weapons. Its a federal tax stamp ($200 per weapon the last I checked). However, the weapons and silencers around that you as a civilian can buy are generally VERY expensive. The last price I saw for a fully legel (assuming you get a permit for Class 2 or 3 weaponry) MP5-SD was around 8k or 9k. Though I think you can probably still get a Ruger 10/22 with an integral supprseeor for under 2 or 3 grand.

This is of course assuming you qualify for a permit. In a nutshell you need to

1 You must be a U.S. citizen over 21 years of age.

2 You must live in a state that allows Class 3 weapons (check
with your state police).

3 You must be clear of any felonies as verified by an F.B.I.
background check.

4 You must submit a fingerprint card and two passport photos,
which are kept on file by the BATF.

5 You must do whatever your state requires as well - some
states have many hoops; some hav none but the federal ones.

Its a very lengthy process. And the weapons themselves are pretty expensive. For just a silencer expect to pay $500 to over 1k for most weapons. Not including mods to the gun to fit it.

You could shoot through a pillow too.

So next time you see somebody at walmart with some oil filters and pillows, snatch their ass in a bear trap.

According the Bad Boys II, pillows seem to suck up some noise as well. Lucky for you that you aren't part of the .50 cal rifle club. Those dudes use ear protection and still rupture ear drums. Many communities have banned them from the gun ranges they are so loud!!!

Really loud!!

Gravity

There are so many ways to muffle the sound from the muzzle of the rifle, just search online and build your own, sheesh!

Silencers are NOT illegal in most states. You will need to purchase them through a class 2 or class 3 dealer. I usally buy my NFA weapons off of Tom Bowers Board (http://www.subguns.com). To purchase a suppressor, you will need to find a dealer in your state, fill out an ATF FORM 4 (http://www.titleii.com), attach a passport photo, fingerprints, and get your CLEO (Chief Law Enforcement Officer's signature). Mail it all in to the ATF along with a $200 check for the transfer tax, and wait. It usally takes 3-6 months. Once approved, the paperwork is mailed back to the C2 or C3 dealer, and you can pick up your suppressor.

All NFA weapons involve a tax $200 for MachineGuns, suppressors, SBR's (SHort Barrelled Rifiles), DD (destructive devices), etc $5.00 tax for AOW's (Any other weapons)... Need any additional information, just let me know.

If you think your neighbors will be pissed off about the noise, wait till they hear your ricochet bouncing around on their property.

Not totally true. There are actually 2 noises that are heard. The suppressor quiets down the initial bang. If you don't use subsonic ammo, you will still hear the crack down range... Using subsonic ammo means that the intial bang is quieted, and you don't hear the crack down range since the bullet doesn't break the sound barrier.

Suppressed 22's with subsonic are a lot of fun - just like a BB gun.

Remember that even suppressing anything larger than a .22 does not make it QUIET like in the movies. You _can_ shoot without hearing protection, but I would advise using some sort of hearing protection. I still wear hearing protection when shooting my suppressed MP5...

Just my $.02.
