So i need to write an essay about this and i got no opinion on it because i just don't care. Unfortunately i can't write if i don't have an opinion, so i am asking you to give me ideas why sensationalist news are harmful to society. Anyone got any ideas?

Learn enough about it to form an opinion.

Pick a side (for or against) and see what evidence there is to support that view.

Perhaps misleading reporting by Fox News actually helps someone, somehow. For example people fund-raising for Republican candidates. Every "death panels!" report might help raise millions.

Sensationalist news sources tend to take any tidbit that might be construed in their direction and twist and warp it until you can barely make out the facts. They have bullshitting skills that can turn a sentence on newborn puppies into a multi-page article that ends in WMDs in Iraq.

Don't you kids just copy shit off wikipedia for these things anyway?

Try this: cut'n'paste 5 random paragraphs from 5 random articles and see what grade you get.

I think the new statistics are about 90% of anyone believes any 'news' they read on the internet now.

The media uses this to their advantage.
