Why are rep's red and dem's blue?

Until 2000, the (R)s always were portrayed as blue and (D)s red. Probably because of the image of the "blue-blood" Republicans and "red blooded American" Democrats. Dunno why they changed it, IMHO the Democrats were probably concerned that being associated with the color red was implying they were communists or something.
