Why are Quadro cards so expensive?

Most certainly.

My job is using Autodesk Inventor 10 and SolidWorks. Needless to say, these 3d modeling programs require some pixel-pushing, but not like gaming, which just needs polygons.

These cards give me sharper and cleaner renders than any gaming card. I use a FireGL, a lower-end one, and it still kicks.

But I see you have your x800xl for some gaming on the side

Ihave a 6800 GT OC in here right now, but I had a Quadro 4 900 XGL when I was working in Max. When I get the new version of Max again, I'll be getting a Quadro FX 2000. But I'm going to have to wait until I get my wife's gaming machine done, because those cards suck for gaming.

As said above, you're paying for drivers written for CAD and rendering, which is a much smaller market than the drivers for gaming.

So while 10 gamers pay $10 each for a driver, 1 CAD guy pays $100 by himself.

Not only that, cards for professional use will pay for itself quickly by saving an engineers valuable time . And its cost is minor when bundled in with a professional workstation+high end monitor.
