Why are pop radio stations such CRAP?

I always knew they overplayed their music but since I got a radio at work on Monday morning the most popular pop radio station here has played (and I'm not exagerating for effect, because exageration isn't needed).

Monday
Enya - Only Time (remix) Played THREE times between the hours of 8:45 and 5:30

Tuesday
Enya - Only Time (remix) Played THREE times between the hours of 8:30 and 5:15

Wednesday
Enya - Only Time (remix) Played ONCE so far today

- also in the last 2.5 days I've heard Ace of Base play four times: Twice were "all that she wants is another baby" and twice "the sign".

WTF? My head hurts, and there are no better radio stations. Is it like this everywhere? I fear it is.

That's how I got sick of Blues Traveler, especially, Runaround. There was only 1 station we could get in the server room that I worked out of back in '95. The POP station played that song ever couple hours, at LEAST 3x a day, usually 4-5 times. Eventually I just had to turn that radio off--permanently!

we have three good ones here, so I just bounce between them whenever they start getting repetitious.

It's a little thing called marketing. Push the song. Increase the popularity. Get people to buy the records. When sales start to slump, leave the band out in the cold. Find a new "hit". Repeat.

Because pop music is crap. Of course, I don't have much room to talk since I like 80's rock.

Yeah, it's harsh, it sucks, but it's true. :(

Whenever there's actually a good song and it plays on the radio, and people like it, they horribly butcher it just like all the generic pop songs! Kind of sad.

Because music isn't popular b/c it's GOOD anymore...pop music is manufactured (see "Popstars, Making The Band")

For this reason, there are like 2,000 boy bands, 5 million pop-whores ala Britney, and hip-hop divas like that fsck Ja Rule...
For the same reason, Jennifer Lopez is allowed to sing...

Firestar's got it right ... that's the way it is. At least before, the pop groups weren't so manufactured as they are now... well I don't know, but I'm guessing that. Cause today you see shows like Popstars! How ridiculous! It's not about the music anymore, it's not about the lyrical or pure musical talent, it's about making a stupid "catchy" tune that teeny-boppers will listen to and buy the albums.

Just listen to most modern "rock" and then listen to stuff out of the 60s and 70s. You can't possibly tell me the new stuff is "better". Yes, I listen to a lot of "new" music and enjoy it, but when I hear bands like Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and especially Chicago - you can't even compare the them! Listen to any old (before the guitarist shot himself) Chicago song! There's so much going on there. There's always a guitar solo, drum solo or SOMETHING happening! And listen to the chords they play!! Can people not tell the difference between a 3-chord song and songs that have chords that new bands could only dream of playing? And plainly even the picking compared to back then sucks,.. GENERALLY! There ARE some good bands today, with lots of talent, that are about the music - but it seems there are many less. Listen to the guitar picking near the end of stairway to heaven by led zep.. that's pretty sweet, don't hear much of that in todays music! And listen to Stray Cat Strut (The Stray Cats), some pretty nice picking in there too. And there's the song everyone knows, Hotel California.. the intro is quite nice.

I wonder... if everyone who listened to all the teenybopper crap went out and started listening to all the old GOOD music, would all the pop "stars" just fade away? ;)

This station has now played Cher at least 3X in the last three days. We just finished the new song by Smash mouth for the 3rd or 4th time in 3 days. There is another song that goes "Sometimes shes black, sometimes shes white..na nananananannaa any other time" - it has played 4-5 times in the last 3 days.

Have they played Dave Matthews? No. Have they played anything good? NO. I like some smash mouth songs but the new one isn't good, and all the station's other stuff is crap.

Oh god. :(

Cher I can't stand... Smash Mouth is alright, but I tend to like their previous stuff a little bit more. You should bring some CDs/tapes with you.

I'm about to plug in my MP3 player as they play "leave me breathless" by the corrs, for the 2nd or 3rd time in 3 days (I'm not making these numbers up). The corrs are actually good - except of course the radio won't play their good stuff, so they play this instead.

The stuff that gets the most play and becomes the most popular does so because it caters to the lowest/dumbest common denominator.
