Why are people swearing left and right and not getting slapped?

It seems as if the mods are spending more time locking threads that go in the wrong place (and not blatantly wrong because a lot of things can go into OT) than dealing with the insane amount of swearing that's going on. It's not like I don't swear in RL, but come on... we all know that most if not all forums prohibit swearing for the most part. Even misuse of pseudo-swearing like fvck in the wrong ways can get you into trouble.

I don't like seeing the F-word being shouted in forums. Just because the swear filter is malfunctioning doesn't mean people should be allowed to use such profane language.

It's not malfunctioning AFAIK, the new guidelines allow swearing in body text, as long as it's not OTT.

Moving threads posted in the wrong category is good. We have multiple categories now, people should use them otherwise it's pointless. OT is for anything that doesn't fit into them.

I'm curious... Are "Chuck Norris", "stab", and "fat wallet" still banned words? Those three always seemed odd to me!

The first two were used into the ground and used for neffing.

I can't understand why we need to allow hard core cussing in a computer hardware forum.

I, for one, don't like it.

We aren't allowing cursing in thread titles or summaries.

We are allowing casual use of any word you want.

If people get extremely vulgar and offensive, that's already against our guidelines. And if they use the new language to abuse someone else, that's also against the guidelines (even if they used less "offensive" words).

i agree. it makes the forum appear like trash.

why not just leave it at the misspellings (fvck, sh!t), and abrevations (wtf).

if it's not allowed on tv, why allow it here?

People that choose to use the language apparently either think that they need to get noticed (insecurity/shock value) or do not have a decent enough command of the english language to know the proper words and must resort to words that are not applicable.

Sad state of affairs if the quality of language being taught in school forces people to not be able to communicate in what would be their native language.

I think you may simply have to accept that the demographics of this forum consist of people who will swear in their daily speech. The ****'s were incredibly silly - you know what the person meant to say. As were the case with misspellings.

What's the difference between fvck and the proper spelling? You know what it's supposed to be. You probably read it the same way in your head.

Swearing can be alright sometimes if it's used properly. Some joke threads, or perhaps if someone is having a really bad day I can see it being used.

Swearing isn't as bad as the abuse other members give to each other.

There should be no tolerance for the mistreatment towards another here on the forum.

Because it's just like when you talk to people. They say "fux" or fck or whatever so it's not an emphasized expletive. That's why people say frick and all sorts of variants of the f-bomb. I don't like seeing it on any forum because it makes it look like trash. Fvck just has a totally different connotation. Also when people know that they can't swear, they use it in less offensive forms. People use it just to show emphasis, but you know once in a while you still see people saying "fvck tard." If I saw that in the full blown form directed at me I would be quite pissed.

Wasn't it said that this is a BASIC CABLE rating on this forum? If you can't swear on cable, you shouldn't be swearing here... that's what I think. I mean there's GANGSTA forums for you to go hit up if you really want to swear. Hell, just say it out loud if you want. Keep these forums clean.

how many times did they say "shit" in that south park episode again? and I remember quite a few variations on "fuck" from that roast of william shatner.

cursing is allowed in basic cable.

in fact, so are bare asses, but we don't allow those here ... so we're actually being more restrictive.

...

while I respect alternative view points, we will not be censoring any words.

we will be placing our full attention on the issue DasFox pointed out -- the important thing is to realize that it's not the specific words we use, but the ideas we convey that have power. we are intent on appropriately moderating our forums so that the environment is neither hostile nor restrictive (from moderators to members or between members and other members).

Well...I believe you have just opened it up wide open for cursing on this forum and I think it lowers the status of the forum.

I have a 16 y.o. that comes on here for computer help and a 10 y.o. that will very soon be coming along behind her. When I let them read this language it says that it is O.K. with me. It is not O.K. and I don't mind telling you it's not O.K.

And...BTW..I have never let them watch South Park. I don't watch that junk. I don't have to. I can change the channel. I can't change the channel here when it's everywhere here, wide open.

A banned member from P&N, who came back under a new name and was constantly being called by his old user name. As to why the word was banned, I don't know.

AT is not your child's parent...YOU ARE. You will have to set the standards and explain to them how THEY should behave.

Yeah...you are right.

I give up. I reconcile AT to the South Park level of members.

Cuss on!

even though we won't have a blanket ban of words, the tone of our computer oriented forums will remain much more professional than our social forums.

I just hope this forum don't ever need any sponsorship from a family-oriented corporation.

look if you'd like to be in a family-friendly atmosphere, there are plenty of forums for you to go to. AT has never been( and never will be fro the looks of it) "family friendly".

I agree whole-heartedly with Mikey. You shouldn't expect the system to change because you don't like it... you have the choice of coming to these forums and you also have the choice to allow your kids to see these forums. If you firmly believe it is too offensive for your youngins, don't let them come on! Simple as that. Though if I had to guess, your children (at least the 16 year old) have already heard much worse at school than you'd find here.
