No they don't. I was a three sport athlete in high school and have played in rec leagues for two sports since college. You do not get nearly the same amount of trash talking as you do in your typical Internet video game. Nor is it something that is held in good standing when it does happen. We've all heard of the term good sportsmanship. But with the blanket of security the Internet provides by distancing ourselves from physical contact, most people think that gives them the ability to turn into a complete asshole.

You never heard of youtube or reddit have you..

I take gaming pretty seriously... its kind of my virtual alter ego...

Yesterday on BF3 on a Metro Server I was the #1 player on the USA side and steam rolled the RU untill they were pinned at their spawn (I was at 18-0 K/D)...till the admin switched me to RU... played as RU for awhile then switched back to USA then a USA 55 Star Colonel teammate that was the current #1 K/D with 30-1 called me chicken... I told him - "okay, I will switch back to RU and ruin your K/D." and for that round I kept flanking the USA line pinning my RU team at the spawn - i kept breaking through the line to keep knifing and killing the dingleberry that called me out on the server. For the next few rounds I harrassed him - I went looking for him every chance I get to to ruin his K/D ratio... for those rounds he would also see I was the tops in frags... he shut up for awhile and evenutally raged quit...

I don't trash talk and normally don't chat in game... I let my game do the talking..:D

I want my 80s back. Gaming has become the antithesis of fun and relaxation.
It was a different time. Attitudes toward gaming in general was very indifferent.
Popularity has changed it forever. Not liking this big business approach.

At least we still got board games. Who is up for a game of Sorry?

I wouldn't brag about getting high kdr on Metro if it's the first set of objectives. That's a crappy layout.

LOL True... but I'm not one of those nube toobers or nade spammers... I play well on soldier maps or large maps when not driving vehicles...

I'm just saying if anyone calls me out on a server I won't respond with a negative comment back - but, I will harrass them all day... :p

99% of the people who talk mad trash in gaming are complete noobs. My personal experience. Rarely do you see someone who is genuinely really good talk smack. It happens, but not much.

What I saw is. Cocky people trash talk. Even if they suck, good people in real life, dont trash talk (a lot).

i take it that you played alone...often.
Trash talk happened back then..in the arcades or playing with friends in your living room...well those of us that didn't play solo all the time. i got into a fight once at the arcades over a crazy climber score i think it was.

When Street Fighter II was all the rave in the 90s... some dude pumped $20 worth of quarters against me, cussing and swearing the whole time - I kept hoping he wouldn't beat me up because I was a total nerd back then... thank god the Korean Liquor store owner had a shot gun behind the counter...

Yeah trash talking is hardly exclusive to online only, go watch a football match errupt into a fight between the fans because one talks shit and gets punched in the face for it.

Been in the living room on a console with other people playing multiplayer and talking crap which degenerates into fights as well. There's less accountability online so it probably happens more frequently, there's also vastly more friction between 64 players in a game of BF3 than between 4 players playing split screen in the living room or 2 dudes down the arcade, so not surprising to see conflicting motivations and desires degenerating into trash talk.

If your trying to say that things aren't worse than they were 20 years ago your either too young to realize or too old to remember :)

Im playing CSS and everyones talking trash, inner team trash talk

Its a game, its suppose to be fun, dont get all stressed about it

I usually get below a 1 KD ration but i love the fun i get from it.

Same for sports too, in ice hockey, if were done, i dont care, im having fun!

Bragging you are the best at a computer game is like bragging you are the number one student at summer school.

When you grow up and have a hard time paying bills and dealing with the stress of life, a person can truly see how pathetic these boastful computer gamers are.

I did, don't see a mention of it in quote.

I'm not sure what you're trying to point out here. Youtube/Reddit are on the Internet and are absent of physical presence. This just lends further to my point that the Internet is worse. I'm not going to get into too many debates with strangers and start calling them obscene things within a couple minutes just because they have a different viewpoint. But that's standard on those sites.

Well the following games are on my wishlist. That doesn't necessarily mean I'd buy them on sale though.

Fallout: NV (still haven't gotten through FO3 so prob wouldn't buy yet)
Saints Row 3
Lord of the Rings: War in the North
Trine 2
Portal 2
Dead Island
Skyrim

There's a bunch of others but I doubt I'd buy any of those right now even on sale.

Whoa dude, calm down. There's no need to take this so seriously.

I was on the #2 3v3 team in the world in WoW a couple years ago, and #1 in the US in RBGS last season.

You all suck!

I agree that some trash talk is stupid. I'm fine with jabbing at others in fun like "nice try" or "try harder next time." But when it starts getting into name calling etc. it just becomes no fun.

I just got rotated to a new position at work and was playing cribbage during coffee with an old guy and he was trash talking to whole time! "You're supposed to go this way, see my pegs!"

The best one was "Do you have a tennis raquet?
Me: "No"
Him: "Have you ever tried playing tennis?"
Me: "Once or twice."
Him: "Well bring a raquet tomorrow. You will play that better than you play cribbage."

Ouch! He ended up beating me that game by only 4 points. THAT is trash talk haha. It has to be humourous and fun, not degrading and immature. Witty trash talk is the best kind. Unfortunately, most gamers are not witty because they don't have the imagination needed to make up original things.

That and a lot of hardcore gamers are insecure nerds dissatisfied with their lives and online gaming gives them an outlet to take it out on other people without repercussions. Why do you think people bother to hack games like BF3?

Competitive trash talk is fine. Malicious trash talk is pathetic.
