I find that the worse the player is, the more they trash talk.

Given I have been playing for a while, I also find it is the younger ones too, but then they are probably more present than others so stand out more when they do it.

Real men do what they came to do and leave. Standing around trash talking is for adolescent losers no matter what their age.

This.

Real men do what they do regardless of vindication, however you seek it. I believe the term is "sportsman like."

Duely blundered from my thunderdolt

real men are naturally competitive, you have to be serious to play hard and trash talking is usually a part of that regardless of what your playing...can't take it then play bejweled or something. in it to win it
So how's the 8th grade treating you?

Good question OP, one which i'd like to get an answer for as well. I've had nightmares after playing games like LOL and DOTA or when there is a Raid Wipe thanks to my sub-par heal in WOW. Nobody gives a fck anymore about anybody these days. They want someone to blame and pin-point. I used to get involved by replying to these trash-talking jerks but after a while i realised that it does not makes any sense and it shakes you up further to a point whre it completely fcks up ur mind and consequently, you gameplay.

Most games have the option to /mute or /ignore people who are trying to mess with your mind. Just stick to your game and ignore everything else.

All games have leaderboards and stats and everybody wants to be on top of the pile. It's in our nature.

Gaming is not just about relaxation and destressing anymore.
If you're not careful, it can quite have the reverse effect on you.

Getting stuck with a filthy noob in any game sucks  So you trash talk them until they stop being so crap at the game or leave, typically the latter

If you are stressed from playing a game, you're doing it wrong or terribad.

Talking smack is a mini-game inside another game. Just increasing enjoyment. :D

However it is stupid in competitive games. I tired dota 2 on a whim last weekend and people kept crying and telling me to just leave game cause i was not helping/noob/etc. So i just tried to find ways for my "team" to not win:D That was more fun than actually winning in that case.

In the earlier days, online banter did use to effect me. To a point where i've rage quit and uninstalled the game. I used to associate myself with games too passionately. I still like it mind you, but the level of enthusiasm is not as much. I just smile and /ignore anybody who shouts out KS while playing LOL, DOTA etc., cos it is not worth the hassle. I'd rather concentrate on the game more than on a witty reply.

And no, games do not stress me anymore. It used to earlier, is what i said. And of course i agree with you that if a game stresses you out, you're doing it wrong.

They do it because they know that there is practically no comeuppance for them.

Many a raid in WoW was ruined not by the people who struggled with the tactics, but by the idiots who simply can't keep their mouths shut.

Games online are inherently competitive and people get emotional when they're competitive, it's perfectly normal, as you say sports are no different, fans blindly follow their teams and trash talk each other, players get into fights etc.

It's just part of the fun for some people, I know it's a pain in the ass for non-competitive players, but that's why the mute button exists and we have friendly/fun servers for most games.

It's got nothing to do with being competitive or not, it's to do with being an anti-social twat.

hehe i would farm cloudsong with my animist all the time.

Veliko being anti-social is not something wrong, people like to play differently. I personally hate groups of people, its just not fun to me. Being a social twat is annoying as well. People constantly crying is not fun for lots of people.

Being obnoxious and anti-social is inherently wrong.

And what on earth is a 'social twat'...?

Like seriously guys, just rise above it. Can you smell that pungent whiff of superiority? Yes? Now bathe in it. I'm just such a better person than you and the best player ever.

[/sarcasm + summary of posts by some of the users here]

If you're playing a team game and there are cheaters/trolls/tkers/utterly, utterly clueless noobs that can't grasp basic gameplay mechanics - then they deserve all the BM they get, quite frankly.

This might come as a surprise to you, but some people actually behave differently in competitive environments than they do in other non-competitive environments, to call someone an anti-social twat because of a serious attitude towards competition is a massive assumption.

Cheaters, trollers, and otherwise bad influences on a game deserve the trash talking. People that lack skill or game knowledge do not. Many studies have shown negative reinforcement is a poor mechanism. You're not helping by calling them names and such and you probably wouldn't be doing it anyway behind the safe anonymity of the Internet.

Very few competitive environments offer the anonymity that online gaming offers.

It's that barrier of protection that allows them to act like that.
