We have a policy where you need to save your files on the file server and NOT on your personal desktop/laptop. Oh well, she'll be b!tching! What is wrong with ppl? They complain when you tell them how to do things right, and they dont wanna listen as it is.

GRRRRRRR, I need to leave IT

----

UPDATE: I didnt mean to come off sounding all rude or anything and no my head isn't big and I dont walk around campus thinking I have the final say and that's how things are going to be. We're flexible with people saving things on their desktop, but we tell them it's not a good option and if something were to happen to the local HD, we are not liable for anything. Out of 300+ ppl, we have about 12 who save files to their my documents.

In this particular case, the user ignored our policy, therefore we had no other choice. Why should I spend my time saving someone else's files to the network? Now, if I had time on my hand I would do it, but now I gotta search the entire hard drive for local word docs, pics, excel docs, etc... Also, this particular laptop I was working on had a major issue, and I wasn't able to save anything. Opening my computer took 10 minutes and it wouldnt connect to the network. It was so slow that clicking on the Start button would take minutes NOT seconds. So, what was I supposed to do? Spend 2 hours working on this issue when I have other important calls to tend to? To the folks who were bashing me, what would you do? Spend 2 hours trying to save her files or fdisk be done with it and tell her not to do it again? Mind you, you have other issues you need to tend to. One person's files that should've been saved on the file server or a problem with the mail server?

Anyways, I normally wouldn't format someone's computer until I'm sure I saved bookmarks and any local files that happened to be saved for whatever reason. I dont just go around and format ppl's computers at first sight, if i had to do it, I would make sure things are saved. In this case, the computer was beyond repaired (the normal way) so I HAD to do what I did.

Yea, I wonder why people are so dumb.

There was this "IT" guy who found that a computer was slow. So, he decided to reformat the drive without backing up any of the files on it first.

We never reformat. Remove the old drive, put in a new one, slave old one either off current machine or another machine in the environment.

any time one of our desktops are messed up we just RIS them and since all our files can only be saved to the netowork no one can really lose anything unless one of our servers goes bad.

Just because a policy is there, does not mean that it is a good policy, and it does not mean that people will follow it.

For example, its not always feasible to work on files over the network. I have to save files on my local drive and back them up to the network each night, even though we have a policy to save everything on the network.

I am an network admin and where I work everything is saved to the network, since part of our building is a callcenter they are heavily locked down and have access to one folder and I think about a dozen websites, unlike on my side(corporate) we can save anywhere but if you dont want to lose something you better save it to the network.

you need to take preventative action like locking down computers so they can't install bullshit and change any registry settings without an admin.

Yep, it's standard policy to do that, but it's also pretty standard to inform the owner you're going to format. Used to do it all the time myself. It's a learning experience grasshopper :)

Put everything on the network? That's a stupid policy, I wouldn't follow it to the letter. And who reformats a user's hard drive without at least checking on a need for backup, unless you work at CompUSA? Simple things like bookmarks are invaluable and would get lost in that situation. I think you're pretty inconsiderate.

I had a user once who called and complained that her keyboard wasn't working.

I took another one down to her and asked her about it... she swore up and down that she didn't do anything.

So I replaced it, and the new one worked, no problem.

When I picked up the old one, I tucked it under my arm to carry it back upstairs and water came pouring out.... she just gave me a funny look and went back to working.

I was pissed (and wet) but what do you do? I made sure her manager was charged for a new keybord....but really that's about all I could do....

I'm still trying to figure out how to get out of IT (or at least out of support) without taking a pay cut. :)

Christ, just run FAST and walk away for a little while then burn the data to a cd. It'll save you headaches in the future. Why be a jerk?

Offline folder data is stored on the local drive until synchronized, so it really doesn't matter if someone comes along and reformats the machine. That's the point, even with all the policies in the world in place, you cannot account for every scenario. That is why blind reformats is a terrible practice which may not get you fired, but will have you justifying your actions every step of the way instead of having satisfied customers.

Hehe...I had a user complain that she couldn't log in, I reset her password, tested login in OWA, I could get in, she couldn't. Went to her office and she had a rubber band around the right side of her keyboard that was slightly holding down the enter key.

Yup.

Better to just replace the drive and slave the old drive for a while to allow her to backup what she needed. Then take out the old drive reformat and ghost a new image.

what will you put on the trouble ticket "Didn't feel like troubleshooting problem so I erradicated all her data instead and re-imaged. Case Closed"
