Why are people so anal about monitor choices?

For me I wanted a great monitor because it is what you have to look at all the time. No mateer what great video card you get if your monitor is crap, then you will suffer. The one thing I tell people to never skimp when buying a comp is the monitor and most of them agree once they experience the difference.

Don't ever buy a new monitor, or else you'll be in the same anal position the rest of us are in. It's a plague, I tell you.

It's because a monitor is one peripheral that isn't upgraded every few months. We tend to keep it for a few years so we want our monitors as flawless as possible.

If you are gonna look at the monitor for such a long time every day, and you don't have the long term big money to mess around, you will b!tch around for a good monitor before buying it.

I know how you feel up to a couple of weeks ago I was using a Link 14" monitor. It was a great display when it first came out but people just bug about it. I had it for over 5 years. When choosing a monitor choose one that will last screw getting to biggest thing out there because most people don't get a brand new one every couple of months

Like everyone else has said, a monitor is usually the component you have that you keep longer than anything else. My old ProView 17" monitor was used on 3 different systems before it gave up the ghost. It was decent, but when I had to fork out cash to replace it, I wanted an upgrade. I looked at many different models, compared prices, and askes for some opinions. When it was all said and done, I replaced it with a spanking new Viewsonic PF790. I've been thoroughly pleased with it and expect it to last me a long time. When I got my secondary home system, I sprung for the better-grade 17" monitor instead of the basic one.

Monitor is the most importance piece of hardware that you have to work with, look at, and some thing that will last longer than 6 months.

Because a lot of people underestimate the importance of a monitor, and ended up whining about how crappy their monitor looks. A good monitor makes a huge difference from a crappy monitor, remember this, it's the piece of hardware that you'll look at THE MOST. And it's one of the hardwares that will stick with you for a long time, because it's very expensive and you dont upgrade it as often as you upgrade your video card, so you dont want to make a wrong decision when purchasing a monitor.

If you get a monitor like my old CTX 17" then you will know why. If yours ever dies and you want another one, I have a bunch of those in the basement. I'll even sell them to you for a good price.

no it's not ok to be on a 14" :D

seriously, 17" is the minimum, and for me, the maximum. I want my PC to be transportable in *some* way so that I could take it to LAN parties for example, and 19" monitors are just too huge.

A monitor is one of the few pieces of hardware you won't want to upgrade every 6 months. So you want to get it right the first time. Also, if you're shelling out $300+ on video cards like a lot of people here are, you want it to look as good as it can. Kind of pointless to buy a 64MB GTS card and then run it at 640x480 on a 15" monitor.

Simple - it is your view to your computer experience and in my case, it cost me almost $800(18 months ago). Dishing out that kind of dough entitles me to be anal.
