Because he's not actively out to stop it. You can disagree with something and not go out and take that something away from others.

Why do you ask?

Im for Gay marriage. but I find the targeting of groups and use of such words discerning. It seems that this has become a war like atmosphere instead of a path to understanding. In short I feel that the current course of things is degrading instead of moving forward.

Majority of the people don't want it. I guess the majority of the people are bigots? Nothing like throwing hate at a group of people because you claim they hate.

Aren't there a few more important issues troubling the US than if "gays" can vote? Could we pick a dumber topic to have a civil war over? Don't worry about our troops dying or the potential for millions to be without a job as long the MINORITY can get their way.

You want to expand on that, or just make vaguely menacing sounding noises about it?
I already expounded on it some. Where sexual preferences are concerned, we already discriminate. Multiple partners can't get married. Do we also accommodate them? Aren't we discriminating if we don't?

I was talking more about your statement that nobody truly wants to see this "can of worms" opened. That seems like a pretty big assumption, and one that doesn't seem real obvious to me. We can't give some people equal rights based on sexual preference because then EVERYONE would want equal rights? Well yeah, that's kind of the point...
The point I was making is that I'm willing to bet there are quite a few, probably even a few in here, who support the right to gay marriage but would completely balk at extending that to multiple partner marriages.

Do you approve of legalizing polygamy and extending marriage rights to multiple partners? ftr, I do.

What's the point of having troops dying in a war for "Democracy" if we're denying civil rights to our own citizens domestically?

Furthermore, if the majority of people voted tomorrow for a law that kept Blacks from marrying, would you be alright with that?

What civil rights is being denied? A "gay" person is free to get married.

At what point do you draw the line and say that what most people want doesn't matter? Who gets to decide that?

"Gay?" What's this quote bullshit? And please, spare me your ridiculous "they can marry a woman hurhurhurhur" nonsense. If you really think that, I hope someone hits you in the head with a pipe wrench. Hard.

I'll answer you second question when you answer mine, "if the majority of people voted tomorrow for a law that kept Blacks from marrying, would you be alright with that?"

Glad to see you wish harm upon someone because they don't want to share your opinion. The fact is gays can marry. I guess isn't not how they want but they still can. Maybe some people don't like the fact they can't marry their sister. What's the difference? Their civil rights are being violated as well.

To answer your question. I wouldn't care. The issue of what a legal marriage is a 1 on my 1 to 10 scale of relevant matters.

No, I wish harm upon you because you're a bigot. Don't get your feathers in a bunch though, I wish harm upon all bigots of any size, shape or creed.

And I guess it's somewhat comforting to know that you don't care about equality at all. That's...refreshing. I guess I won't be seeing you at the next protest, huh? You know, every time I say "this is the stupidest fucking post I've ever read on these forums," someone always comes along and disproves me. I guess you can take a little solace in the fact that this time, you have proved me wrong. Congratulations, you win the "stupidest fucking post I've ever read on these forums", award. There are so many things wrong with your argument that I just shit my pants. Really. Right now. Reading what you wrote made my bowels loosen and now I have to wash my chair. Congrats, again.

That you even compare marrying one's sister to gay marriage is...Christ...I hope you don't have kids and if you do you just silently nod and smile whenever they're around - because if you're teaching them this bullshit, I weep not only for them but everyone in a six block radius.

Oh and just out of curiosity, what ranks a 7+ on your scale of "relevant matters?"

It's a religious institution. State has no business defining it one way or another. Each church can decide for itself which marriage it wants to recognize. State should replace word "marriage" with "partnership" and get out of this debate entirely.

Blacks could marry too, they could just only marry other blacks. Really, whites were prevented from marrying blacks as well so it was completely equal. I don't see what all the complaints were about. And schools? Black kids still got to go to school didn't they!? They were just whiners.

And really, what's the difference between gay marriage and incest? People are always whining about birth defects. What I say is that sure we might get a few bad ones, but we're virtually guaranteed to get a few hilarious ones too.

After reading some of your replies, I can't believe that you have the nerve to accuse someone of being a bigot or having "the stupidest fucking post I've ever read on these forums". You try to cast hate upon anyone that dares not to follow your lead.

I hope that you honestly don't think it's ok to go around bullying and disrespecting others because they don't share your opinion? To write such personal attacks towards others, then post silly nonsense like "I just shit my pants" because you dislike their opinion makes me sad to be an American.

If you have time between washing poop from your cloths and furniture, I would love to hear the difference between you disapproving of brother and sister marrying and others disapproving of gays marrying. I would hate to post some of my other opinions because you may pee your pants. What about first cousins marrying? Should a person allowed to have multiple spouses? I can almost hear the first drops now.

For gays to be able to get married they should have to prove that their union can provide good fodder for a 20/20 episode, or a week of specials on Maury.

I'm not even sure what sort of argument the stupid incest/polygamy/etc thing is. The premise is false as it implies an equivalency where none necessarily exists. Polygamous families are frequently associated with child abuse, and while correlation does not mean causation it is certainly reported enough to merit further study before declaring the union benign. Incest demonstrably leads to birth defects. How that makes them equal is beyond me.

The thing is that even if they were 100% right and polygamy and incest don't have enough bad attributes to merit banning, that still doesn't address the point of the argument for gay marriage. It might make the pro gay marriage/anti-polygamy people hypocrites, it might make them stupid, but it does absolutely nothing to show why gays shouldn't be married.

Unless "we're both bigots so now its okay" is somehow a valid debate tactic that is.

Why do you get to decide on the existence of equivalency? So it's ok to dismiss others views but if they don't get to dismiss yours? Nobody said anything about "two wrongs make a right". You speak of only the bad in the marriage types you don't support. I guess marriage should be made illegal in the US since there are many cases of child abuse, spousal abuse, and most end in divorce.

Or maybe it's how people now think it's ok to belittle others as long as "they are fighting the system". Maybe that makes me a little sad that special interest groups can bully people into accepting their beliefs. Talk about taking a page from Bush's "either your with us or against us" playbook.

WRONG! The state (meaning the government) has been in the marriage business for centuries.

In the U.S., state governments allow the clergy to perform weddings essentially as a functional courtesy to those religious institutions. For all legal purposes, including taxation and legal rights and duties, marriage is first a creature of the state, and authorized clergy who perform religious weddings are merely agents of the state for the purpose.

In France, people are free to engage in church religious wedding ceremonies, but only civil weddings are deemed legal marriages under the law.

Disrespecting? Nono, I'm giving you exactly the amount of "respect," (if such a thing exists in the ether of the internet) that you deserve. Although perhaps next time, if you write something with a little more basis in reality and intellectual merit, my sphincter won't immediately unclench and void my bowels onto the carpet like so many dropped chocolate cakes.

The "arguments" involving polygamy, incest, bestiality et al would be perfectly valid except for the fact that they're ridiculous. They're simply nowhere even close to two, consenting adults being married. There is no equivalency, none. Zero.

The closest you MIGHT be able to come is to argue that polygamy should be legalized. And although I'm not personally opposed to it and would listen to any argument that is pro-polygamy, the two are simply not similar. Eskimo's post on the subject are very insightful. You should give those a looksee.

Again, you're dodging everyone's questions. Here, allow me to reiterate them:

What's in it for you when you keep gays from getting married? How in the world does it affect you at all?

Why does close relatives being married mean retarded kids? Who says they wish to have kids? If close relatives keep having offspring, it will lead to big problems. Brother and sister having a kid does not mean an instant birth defect/retardation.
