Why are people so afraid of terrorism ?

maybe the reason it doesnt bother me is because I live in a smaller community, where terrorism isn't a likely threat. I guess I could understand if you lived in a landmark city or something...

and? It was a shock, it could have happened anywhere.
Haven't you even seen the footage of, say, hurricanes or wildfires in various parts of the world? Do you cower in fear when the media says the fire danger level is "yellow" today?

Would you be more upset if your mother was killed in a car accident or if she was murdered by a serial killer? One we can understand and eventually accept, the other we cannot. (or at least many people cannot)

Fear of accident, disease and natural disaster is different. We see those as something that is just part of the world. It is sad when someone dies from one of those causes, but it is far more disturbing and shocking when a person or a large number of people die as a result of other people's intentional actions. Also, a large part of the fear is not of what has happened, but of what we imagine might happen.

But for the most part, people in this country really are NOT so afraid of terrorism. At least not so afraid that it really changes the way they live their lives. We pay more attention and have more worry on our mind, but most people are still willing to visit big cities and fly on airplanes even with raised alert levels.

Most people do not "cower in fear" as you put it. If they did, there wouldn't be anyone living in NY or DC anymore.

There are people who want you to be afraid. They derive power from your fear. Many will gladly give those people control over themselves for some imagined security. The greatest threat to America is not terrorists, but those willing to sacrifice your and my traditional liberties. Why? Because they are cowards.

Bah, terrorism. fvck it. you gotta die some way. If you die from a terrorist attack in the US, you're going to go down in history. Can you say that if you get hit by a bus and killed 2 blocks away from a terrorist bombing??

No, but I could say that if I get hit with the bus my life insurance will payout and take care of my children, whereas with a terrorist attack it WONT.

Because one is part of life, and the other is an act of 'evil'.

The media tells you to? That's a little obtuse.

I'm not afraid of terrorists. I just feel that people who are willing to fly planes into buildings because they hate our way of life deserve to be shoved into wood chippers (like the people in the movie Fargo).

terrorism is more annoying than anything else.

all the streets around my office are currently closed off and swarming with cops. I had to park a few blocks away tonight -- it sucked 🙁

Exactly.

Not to mention bad health usually (of course not always....) has a slow onset, and if you are getting sick enough to die you most likely know it's coming.

This isn't to say I walk around in fear or that anyone else should though. If something happens it happens. Deal with it when it does.
