Why are people complaining about Dell not offereing AMD?

If I had to guess, I would say its because Dell gets major kick backs from Intel to be Intel-Exclusive. They only 'publicly ponder AMD' to get Intel to continue those kickbacks or offer better kickbacks.

Dell does have to really good deals on their merchandise though, if only they used American tech support and customer service. 🙁

HUGE discount for using Intel chips and CPUs. The newer Dells are craps...much worse than Emachines. Course NOOBS are interested in the DELL name and cheap price.

I'd say that over 90% of the people on this msg board who complain about Dell, would never buy a Dell even if they did offer AMD.

(Us enthusiast types tend to build our own rigs. 🙂 )

They're just rooting for their favorite corporation, that's all. 🙂

Dell also builds an extremely high quality PCs at the low end.

Those 400SCs are still rock solid and i bought them forever ago (the 3.2C for ~$400 shipped deal, bought 5)

I'm not even an enthusiast yet I've always built my own rigs since I was 12 years old. Every Dell deal I've jumped on I always end up stripping it of parts and selling it piecemeal.

I complained about Dell not carrying AMD since I'm an AMD stock holder, and I knew it would be nice for share prices, truth be told!

I just bought my first prebuilt computer since I had an old IBM Pentium MMX sort of deal, and my first Dell ever. It's this laptop of course, and it had impressive specs for a low price - a steal in comparison, really, so I decided to go for it. The construction isn't all that rigid, and the annoying things about buying prebuilt machines are still there (bloatware and all that stuff) but so far it isn't bad. Performance, relative weight and battery life are about as good as you can get for a 17" laptop.

However, I would NEVER buy a prebuilt computer. I would recommend these HP AMD machines to family and friends though, but inherently, the AMD processor isn't going to prevent the annoyances of prebuilt machines nor greatly enhance the way they use the computer. It's just more for the principle of it.

My moms friend has a 4 month old dell..the motherboard died and they made her pay $400 for a replacement board..on a $700 computer..they told her the motherboard wasn't covered by the waranty...I could never recomend a Dell to anyone...

Seems we are missing part of the story... What model is the PC?

Not sure what model it was, it was brand new only bought 4 months ago..motherboard died 2 weeks ago and they charged her $400 for a new one. I just know it's a $700 prescott based system, don't know anything else about it, no way the motherboard is worth $400 and no reason it shouldn't have been covered under waranty.

Was it under warranty? The standard Dell warranty only 90-day. Usual cost $20-30 for 1-year and $60-80 for 2-year warranty.

if it wasn't under warranty, couldn't you find a cheaper motherboard somewhere else, the rest of the computer shouldn't be under warranty if the mobo isn't

I still say we are missing part of the story... It just doesn't make sense.

It's a desktop system, and they charged $400 for just the motherboard. I guess maybe she only got the 90 day waranty, but I thought they usualy came with a 1 year waranty. I don't know many details other than she had to pay $400 to get the motherboard replaced on a 4 month old Dell.

I guess that's how they make up the cost for people who pay for the warranty and have the motherboard and hard drive replaced under warranty. 🙂

Wow! Standard warranty for a new DELL is only 90 days? Any link to confirm? My friend has a new 8400. The PSU fan made a loud noise 1 month after purchase. POS.

90 day warranty is standard now. I would purchase the extended warranty for anything but the low end celeron special. Too bad your mother didn't search ebay for a replacement board instead of buying from dell. The boards just snap into the case. She could have bought a whole new system for that price.

Whats the service tag on the computer? Ill check into the case to see what really happened..... Theres no way thats the entire story 🙂

People don't like that dell doesnt sell AMD's because Dell regularly has deals on complete systems (sometimes with a monitor even) for less then what the processor alone sells for. No one else comes close to that except rare sales where they usually only have 5-10 on hand and you must get there at 12am to camp out for a 9am store opening to get one.

At our company we are finding almost 100% failure rates on the (I think it is) D270 desktop model motherboards. Bad caps....We replace about 50-100 a month out of the 7000 we got recently.

My companies IT only buy gateway, and only the "E" series.. very good to us so far. We as invidual scientists/engineers are allowed to spec out and buy whatever we want from whomever we want... Have guys with SGI's to Alpha's.. I built my own opteron 246 box with Iwill and 4 x SCSI cheap comparativly speaking😛 It's the master node for a 40 A64 rocks cluster in addition to my desktop machine. Not one day down in 10 months now.
