Why are people buying the mini-Cooper?

Cooper USA

They've started to sprout up in my condo parking lot recenty. Now I know they've been relatively popular in Europe where petrol (gas of course) is much more expensive, but the damn thing starts at $16,500US! For $18,000 you'ld think you should get alot more car than this.

I like how they market it- SUV Backlash. Yeah, I wouldn't want to be in one of these going head to head with one...

BMW quality, handling, resale value, and engineering, in a good looking car, and somewhat inexpensive, comparatively.

most of the ones i've seen are S models and they're pretty darn quick

because there are very few small, sporty feeling cars that have style on the outside, and more importantly, on the inside. except for that goddammed speedo in the middle of the dash unless you pay 2K for GPS.

it's a very good looking car with the packages, you should try it out... the exterior/interior updates on which type of feature you select, for example, the computer navigation would be in the center panel and the meters (forgot which) would be moved behind the steering wheel..

that and the italian job. ;)

why? because they're so ugly they're cool looking, their styling has a distinctive euorpean look which is a far cry from most cars on the roads these days, and it's a fairly well-built car with good economy.

You know, there's always one. I ask a serious question and someone has to be a jerk.

I honestly have no experience with the car, other than what I've seen of it. If it's as good as people say I might have to take it for a test-drive. Thanks.

One element does seem a bit scary to me- with all the big cars on the US highways, how safe is this car?

:p What do you think that's in there for? Don't take anything personal and don't brandish my reputation as "the one" in this forum... I tell it as it is... no respect to age, color, creed, sexuality... now get in line maggot ;)

You can get a tricked out, option laded Mini for 20-25K. Not bad frankly, if I was going to get something non-saturn I would have to go with a Mini. Although the wait time can really suck, not sure I want to wait a long time for a car.

I can see what the fuss is all about after seeing The Italian Job (good movie BTW).

However bang for your buck and as a daily commuter the Subaru WRX > Mini Cooper

I've heard its a very safe car, especially for its size. Read some article a while back.

After seeing several Cooper S's at autocrosses, I'll vouch for the excellent handling. Go to an autocross and see for yourself why they are awesome machines (handles like a slot car).

Those things are freaking ugly, and impractical. Hell, I couldn't even fit me and my g/f's luggage in that thing on the way to the airport.

If it's just you and your girlfriend, fold down the rear seats. Geez, some people don't use their brain!! :)

And they look awesome.
