Why are PC3200 1gig sticks so freakin expensive?

The cheapest i can find at pricegrabber is $219, and that's from "MarkOne" computers (0 feedback). It's corsair CAS3 RAM. Nothing really special from what i can tell. Model #VS1GB400C3. Newegg sells the same stick for $300.

With all the <$100 512mb deals around, i wish i could find a <$200 deal for a 1gig stick. Why is 1gig so disproportionately expensive? You'd think that demand would be there with people not wanting to use 2 x 512mb because it prevents them from upgrading past 1 gig without throwing away their current memory.

First off, crucial is really overpriced. Beyond that, making 1gig RAM is more expensive than making 512MB sticks. And like JBT said, less demand. Lot more system manufactures out that selling 512 sticks as opposed to 1gig sticks.

Question: If i buy, say, a 1gig stick of corsair ram now, can i add a stick of crucial ram later? If i can, does it have to be the same size, speed?

Anyone want to make a recommendation?

MemorySuppliers.com has this:
SAMSUNG 1GB PC3200 400MHZ CL2.5 DDR SDRAM
for $240 + $5 S&H

OR

This from MarkOne.com:
Model# VS1GB400C3
Corsair 1GB DDR module, PC3200, 400MHz, 64Mx64, 184-pin, unbuffered, CAS 3.
$219 shipped.

The only thing is that Corsair says that this chip is 128M x 64. Not sure what that means. It's under their "Value Select" line.

Anyone have any experience with this? Does "Value select" mean that it's poor at overclocking? If so, i can just OC the FSB and leave the memory at DDR400, right?

Yes you can. It doesn't have to be same size/latency but both sticks will run at the slower memory's speed.
