I'll get right to the point. Here's the story. My friends mom downloaded something on their computer that made it lock up and not much at all could be done with it. They took it back to gateway to have them fix it, and after like a week they got it back with a new hard drive. My friend anfd I like to play counter-strike at my house once in a while on my lan using my d-link router. He usually brings his computer here so we can both play. Before his mom screwed up the computer, our pings were the same on our favorite server(20-40). Now his pings are 20-40 when he's not playing or doesn't see people, but in action his ping skyrockets to over 100 and lags him bad. His computer is a p4 1.7 with 256mb RAM. I talked to another friend and he said it was his NIC, so we got a brand new d-link NIC and the same problems exists. His old NIC was a linksys. My computer is a Athlon xp 1500 with 512 ram. His computer is a bit faster, so it should have at least equal or better ping. I've tried different network cables and ports pn the router, all are the same. I've had other friends bring their computers over and their pings are identical to mine. I've concluded that it isn't my router or my network cables, and it's not his NIC either. What's going on here?
PS: Another weird circumstance is after he messed with some network settings in network neighborhood and file sharing, a different friend and I were online abnd after 5 mins ALL 3 of our internet just cut out and forced us all to restart. If I unplug the p4, then I can go on the internet for however long I want. After we switched the NIC in his computer, this was no longer a problem. He is running Windows ME and I am running XP. My other friends that have had no trouble with pings at my house have WIndows ME and Windows 98. Is this weird or what?
