why are newegg.com's shipping prices so screwed up?!

I LOVE newegg with a passion...except for their whole shipping thing. why is it that an enermax a1qx case can be shipped for $8.00, but an OEM soundcard needs $9.00 for shipping? are they doing this just to make us crazy? why is there no option for ground shipping (my method of choice)??

sorry this was just a gripe session...

Don't forget shipping is not only the cost of the transport medium but also the cost handling the item. OEM power supplies are pretty sturdy and a layer of bubble wrap will suffice. The sound card most likely came in a bulk tray and needs to be placed in a static bag or static resistant blister pack. Then it usually goes into Newegg's trademark white cardboard box. Newegg also goes beyond typical OEM part seller by including drivers. I've noticed they are nice enough to either provide a floppy or burned CD if factory drivers are not available.

As a whole I think their S&H costs are very fair. You will typically pay a similar price for ground shipping with many other companies. The incremental cost of additional items is also very small. It typically only goes up a dollar for the next item short of a case.

Despite it all, they are usally much cheaper than everyone else. No one is forcing you to order from them. You can choose any vendor you want.

Drives me crazy too. I was looking at some products and noticed that shipping for nearly identical products can vary drastically. For instance, for the SanDisk USB card readers the compact flash version only costs $6.00 to ship while the SmartMedia version costs $10 to ship. Both are Fedex Saver Shipping, both
items cost the same ($23.00), both items weigh the same, both items come in identical packaging.

I asked them about it and got this really cryptic message that totally fails to answer the question about shipping:

-----quote------

We lower the price of certain items to lower the over all cost of any item.

Thank you.

Someone said that NewEgg might be shipping different items from different warehouses... Check the shipping label..

Also, maybe they use shipping costs to somehow "push" some items and make them more popular than others? But I guess changing the actual price would a better way to do it..

BrunoPuntzJones,

Yeah, after you called them repeatedly and bitched about it :) :)

Just kidding. But I did have to call twice to get my shipping upped - after they delayed the order beyond anything reasonable.

They ship everything in seperate boxes, that's probably one reason why it costs so much.

actually i was a little concerned about it. but they actually emailed me without me ever doing anything. just checked my email when i got home, had a subject that read: upgrade shipping. just said that they were moving to next day instead of 2nd day. was kinda suprised. usually takes a lot of arguing and trouble :|

You think you have it bad, I live in Hawaii. To order from Newegg, I have to wait till I have a lot to order. If I order a single item, no matter what it's going to be around $20.00 plus for shipping. :(

yeah, seen the same thing before on CPU's though, 2 different CPU speeds, retail boxes, different shipping cost... But overall still good prices and you know that if you order something that you will get the correct item too.

I do believe they also have at least 2 different wharehouses in CA, me and my brother ordered a CPU, 2 Epox boards, 2 WinXp from them and got 2 different packages that were 1 day apart from each other and on the FedEx tracking coming from 2 different cities.....

Still a good company!

I've bought mulitple items from newegg and they shipped it all in the same box...but the thing that gets me is the seperate shipping cost for each item. Why can't they assign a shipping cost for a large package? I mean I KNOW from experience that it comes in a big box, I just don't like getting stuck with several 5-10 dollar shipping costs for each item...it really adds up to a lot of money in the end.

But don't get me wrong...they do end up being pretty cheap in the long run...but the adding up of the shipping costs is definitely a deterrant....

I've ordered a lot from newegg. The shipping charges are there way of making up the differences for some of the lowest prices. I've seen the same cpu chip lowered 2$ overnight but the shipping go up 3$. You have to remember that your final cost is what is important. Some companies offer cheap prices but make it up on the shipping. Still, neweggs prices are still about the cheapest even with the shipping and they are a good company to deal with.

<< cryptic indeed. But I usualy order a bulk of items when i go there . >>

The shipping just adds up. I wish they'd give us a break on individual items in large orders
They really can't though. I suspect the reason for different shipping costs for nearly-indentical items (the CF vs SM readers) is due to the fact that they almost need to price them the same ("Why is the SM one more expensive, they both dothe same thing?"), when one probably costs them more to sell. They offset that with the shipping cost.

Prices are low, yes, and some good deals to be had. Shipping will kill you for a large order though.

Some people say that shipping adds up with the shipping charge for each item, some have the shipping charge lower than the accumulated charges. Strange.

just depends. ordered about 600$ worth of stuff the other day, shipping was 22$, what the individual items added up to be.

i added another item that cost 7$ shipping, but my total shipping went up to 25$, the other 4 did add in. so either it was a break (due to shipping) or there are some items in the system which arent added in just right.

I think newegg's shipping rate is very fair considering its location (i live in NJ, newegg is in california). I also like how they advertise the prices of shipping for each item as well as how they do lower shipping prices as you buy more stuff instead of keeping it to themselves.

i only ordered once and that was a 60gig maxtor overall it was ok. but i may order more in the future such as motherboard, new cpu but have to get everything elsewhere. i compare prices on most products and like Best Buy it is not a one place shopping for all your needs.

HHmmm... If you order several items from them, the shipping goes down drastically too, its not like $5-10 for EVERY item. Have you ever ordered multiple items from them? You can
even try placing several items in your shopping cart then checking the shipping cost later without actually placing the order. Their shipping is still way cheaper than other places which charge
more for GROUND shipping.
