Update:LOL I took my copper shim off to see if it would help the temp any and man did it ever. My temp is staying at 40 celcius as I type this so I am guessing 45-48 under load. My temps are cut in almost half. Heck with that copper shim. If I can run alot cooler without it I think I will take my chances on the core. I did weaken the clip on my heatsink before putting it back on because it was a little stiff.

I have a Tailso copper based heatsink(the one with 3 prongs) thin layer of ASII and a Thermaltake 5400RPM fan. My temps stay at around 52-61 celcius. What sucks is my CPU is down 1 voltage(1.65 default 1.75). Have a 1600+ none overclocked.

Any idea if the temps are off?

Using a Epox 8kta3+.

i don't nkow too much aobut the board... but 2 things

1. the mobo might be reporting the temps higher than they really are... lots of mobo's do this...

2. your hsf mihgt not be set properly... i had to re-set my hsf 4 times before my temps finally started dropping...

I know 3 people that have Athlon XP's (palomino) that run between 50-60 degrees C. 40C is almost unheard of for them. They all have epox boards, so it might be that the motherboard was reporting a higher temperature than what it really was, but I can't confirm that. (8K3A+, 8K5A2, 8K3A)

Under load, with a Palomino at stock speeds and below voltage, you should see temps low-mid 50C's, 60C is just too high. Definately re-do the heatsink, sometimes you leave cloth fuzz on the core/heatsink after cleaning, and I allway's use a magnifying glass to inspect both surfaces before I mate them. You would not beleive what you can find left over even after cleaning under close inspection.

Would you all consider 63C to be too high for an AthlonXP 1900+ at default voltage running at 143MHz fsb under 100% load (Prime95)? Mobo is Epox 8K3A+...

My AMD Athlon thunderbird 1.4 runs @ 65c and I have no problems. Im speaking from a thunderbird chip but on AMD's website it says that these temps are ok. I've been running this chip for 2 years now and no problems at all.

Sniper: is your computer locking up? If not I wouldnt worry about it too much.

Yeah those copper shims hold heat around the core, but in your case it might have been elevating the heatsink off the core a little. Who knows.

Thats true. But I did notice one side of the shim was a little higher than the other and the heatsink wasnt getting good enough contact with one side of the core.

This rocks to because I am currently running my PC2100 and 1600+ at 166FSB at default voltage and prime95 hasnt gave a error yet with a couple hours of testing in the background. Before I took the shim off it wouldnt last a min without getting a error in prime95.

I did also update the BIOS on my Epox to the latest but dought the helped much on overclocking but who knows. Still testing though.

I've read that the 8k3a/8k3a+ overreports temps for tbreds...not too sure about palaminos though

All I know is, if someone is using a copper shim and are having high temps you might want to take the shim off to see if that helps any. I thought my ram couldnt handle 166fsb or my CPU just won't do 1.75ghz at up to 1.8v. It was neither the shim was causing my CPU to run much hotter making it unstable.

Now that my temps drop I have been running prime for right at 6 hours without a single error(before it only took a min or 2). So before you sink money into more ram or something you might want to remove your shim. Also another thing make sure you use a paper thin layer of ASII/III or compound.

Yup.
Had the same problem before.
My problem was caused by a cheap copper shim I bought from sv..

My XP 1700+ Tbred hits 74 full load... no crashes or any instability at all, but reading this thread makes me pretty worried :frown:
