At the Chinese grocery stores they have them now for the upcoming harvest/moon thingy but they are really expensive. I've seen boxes sell for $40 and up. They are usually made of bean or lotus bean paste so I don't understand why they are so expensive.

    :Q $40? Wow.

I never buy them.. but I typically get a few boxes as gifts. Yay to free moon cake.

they are used as gifts and some have very intricate designs

im not justifying the price, but that's probably why they can charge that much

because they only sell them this time of year.
because chinese people are willing to pay for it.
because there's like over 9000 calories in each one.

seriously, the average boxes are ~$40 now? or are those the super high tier fancy pants gourmet ones? i remember when the average quality ones use to be $15-20'ish.

Because it's expensive to import them from the moon.

    $5-$7 each

For the ones that have nuts, that adds to the cost.

There are always very dense - difficult to eat two at one sitting.

Depends on the recipe. Some of my Chinese friends told me that the fancier moon cakes would use all sorts of exotic and expensive ingredients like real shark's fin. They also told me that there were extremely expensive moon cake boxes that included things like jewelry and other valuable stuff.

I went to the nearby bakery (this was in China) and bought a few plastic wrapped ones for less than a buck each. They were kinda gross, but I have never really had a moon cake that I enjoyed. To me they seem like fruitcake - usually given as a gift, but no one really wants them or ends up eating them.

Happen to remember which version you got? Moon cake uses different beans and yeah I only like a specific kind. Honestly if it wasn't so unhealthy I could go eat that everydaay.

No idea which ones I got... it was (almost) two years ago. I remember one person telling me that some of them were meat-flavored, though, and I'm pretty sure I got a meat one that I had to spit out after I took a bite.

I do remember the brand, though. They were from Maky Bakery.

The Moon Pie factory is like 10 minutes from here. I don't know exactly where, but I always hear about it.
