Why are Microsoft critical updates always broken?

I always get this message after downloading:

"The following updates were not installed. To try again, click the Back button below.

Critical Updates Package"

Then after a few days it works...what gives with this sheyat? Having to ignore the pop up for 3 days is annoying as all get out.

I've never had any problems with them. Except the new windows XP drivers for the hauppauge wintv pci, which didn't work (but they installed).

I have had the same thing occur with a particular critical security update - it would download OK, but then fail about halfway during the installation phase. That happened on 3 systems . . . and it continued over a month. That file finally made it to the corporate download site, and I downloaded it as a file. I then installed in manually to all three systems with no problem.

The problem lies in M$'s auto-installer. I think if it finds your files and programs other than in its pre-conceived location, it balks. With multiple systems to update, I hate the auto update anyway, and just wish that they would let us download the file and go from there. 🙁

But then . . . that is not the M$ way . . . they lose control over us. 😉
