Why are many computer people arrogant in person?

When it comes to computers?

I'm sure i'm not the only one to notice this. It always seems that many people (not all) who sell anything remotely related to computers or even just know a decent amount about them seem to always come across as arrogant in their struggle to convey their opinions.

What do you think causes this?

When someone can't seem to 'right-click' for the life of them, it's hard not to sound like an arrogant bastard.

If this conversation is over the internet, it is really hard to tell their expressions, and voice tone over IM, or a message board. Most people say things that they normally wouldn't say.

it takes more brainpower to translate technical language into words a layperson can understand. hence, computer literate people are inherently lazy too.

My apologies, I meant in person. I'll update the OP

Or, when you watch someone fill out a web form without tabbing from field to field - clicking on each field.

type, type, type....

.... mouse movement.... CLICK....

..... type, type, type......

Or, possibly worse, using Google, typing into the search field the web addresses of shift you already know, just so you end up with a link to click.

1. Open Browser (Google is homepage)
2. Search for "www.whatever.com"
3. Results for whatever.com show up
4. click link for whatever.com

I hate explaining hardware to people, and I hate when they ask me if I can fix their PC. I know enough to keep mine running and upgraded as needed. Thats it.

I think using a computer and not being able to program is like being a eunuch in a whore house. So maybe I'm one of those arrogant folks. I feel the same way about folks who use the web and can't even create and load a simple web page.

cause they think they're sooooooooo good. :p
actually, it's funny to pull some terms out of my hat and make them think i know what i'm talking about. then they start to treat you better.

it's like when i tell a doctor or a dentist that i am in their profession, suddenly they feel they have to explain their every action in intricate detail.

I am offended by this thread.
I am equally arrogant on the phone as I am in person.

"Why are many computer people arrogant in person?"

Because that is all they have. It is as simple as that. They are just as mediocre and unimportant as everyone else, but for a few minutes, every few days, they get the power trip. They know more than you.

They are about one (or twenty) steps below the rent-a-cops working the local high school with the metal detector wand. Yeah, you're important, but not that much.

Self-importance is golden in an age of mediocrity.

Classic.

yeah thats cute but not realistic.

Not really that realistic, but the "eunuch in a whore house" bit carries it.
