why are laptops more expensive in asian countries ?

I thought laptops should be cheaper in Asian countries than in US ... but wherever I look , they are more expensive ...

like here ..

it's clearly stated that it costs 61,810 Taiwan dollars = $1,770.05 USD ...

and that's for : P-3-733/128MB/12.1"/15GB/Win 98 ... such laptop would cost maximum about $1,300 in USA

My girlfriends grandpa got one for a whole lot cheaper in Singapor, i think it was around $1,500 here, and it ended up being around $800 from there

I remember there was a post here a week ago from someone posting from an internet terminal in a Hong Kong Airport (I think it was Hong kong). He said that laptops were extremely cheap there.
