why are laptop wifi service so expensive?

That's not wifi service. (At least not like 802.11x is wifi)

It's data over the cellular telephone network. And it's expensive, as Schadenfroh says, because those who need it are willing to pay for it.

yeah, the price is high... but broadband wi-fi anywhere in town is pretty sweet. I would even venture to say it is $30/mo sweeter than conventional broadband :)

It's good for businessmen on the road.

But if you're an occasional road warrior like me, you can make due with one of the hundreds (if not thousands) of free WiFi hotspots in my metropolitan area.

My dad travels the country with his laptop and just always makes due with free or low cost hotel internet.

Just park in front of hotels that offers free wi-fi. I did all my net activities that way when I drove across country. :)

I remember being somewhere in Indiana and we stayed overnight just off the Interstate. I could grab wifi signals from five different hotels and one truck stop.

i have Verizon. i am on the unlimited data plan for my Audiovox 6600 (pda phone). i also have a usb driver for it so that i can use my phone as my laptops modem when i'm on the road.

the plan costs me $49.99 / month.
