Why are lampshades nowadays conical with the shorter diameter at the top?

Back when I was growing up lampshades had some odd shapes. We had a couple of lamps in the living room that were two tier with vertical sides.

In those days everybody believed that watching TV in a dark room would make you go blind, so most folks had some sort of a lamp that looked like a funnel that directed the light at the ceiling.

Oh, The Clapper originated with one of the ofirst TV remotes that worked off of soundwaves. :D
