Why are in-flight entertainment systems are so laggy and buggy?

They are not only extremely laggy but very buggy as well. I'm not talking about a specific airline but I've experienced this with almost every airline I have traveled with. They lag pretty much all the time (especially during and around announcements). They crash way too often; I have seen more BSODs than I would like! Fast-forwarding programs lags and it's hard to synchronize and forward/rewind to the point in time one would like to.

I guess software guys and especially those with experience in RTOSs can answer this.

I mean really, who cares?

I do. Please enlighten me as to the true purpose of ATOT if a thread like this has no place here.

I didn't say your thread didn't have a place here. It will find its' way to the bottom soon enough.

I flew Continental to Japan a couple weeks back and it wasn't bad. I think there were 250+ movies, TV shows, and then a ton of music. The only problem was that I kept breaking the headphone jack.

I don't care if it sinks to the bottom after I get a few intelligent responses and it looks like they most certainly won't come from you.

good question

most are quite shite. but even more appalling is that many airlines/aircrafts dont even have real IFEs... no AVOD (on-demand) but rather horrrible looped video systems

be lucky you have any in flight entertainment at all

Absolutely! When I was growing up, well, we had to carry our own in-flight entertainment to the airport! Uphill! In the snow!!

Its probably because there is only one or two actual computers handling the in-flight entertainment on every seat. With that much simultaneous streaming and probably old, barely meeting the minimum requirement hardware...you end up with a very laggy and buggy system.

Just my guess though, I don't have any idea how it is actually implemented.

IFEs? What do you mean by "looped video systems"?

Wow, at least you could afford something fancy. My entertainment when flying was reading a book or looking out the window.

ife = in-flight entertainment
looped = movies/shows are centrally broadcast. you tune in to each channel... ie channel 3 plays a movie over and over again.

no avod = no start/stop/ff/etc selection of what you want to see

I am by no means a rich guy but aren't in-flight entertainment systems available on almost all half-decent airlines? Of course I am not talking about the budget airlines like Ryanair.

The A330 I was on to and from Europe each time kicked ass. The only issue was they had to reboot the whole system on the way home out of the 4 8+ hour long trips I had.

They weren't laggy either, were pretty responsive when actually up. It was the type where you had your own little 7" LCD with a remote to change movies/games and whatnot.
