Why are IBM thinkpad so great?

In what sense they are so much bettert compared to Dell or Toshiba?
I have a 600m for school and when I want to use it I put it on a desk and plug the mouse. How would a thinkpad make my experience much better?

overall the engineering is better, imo..

1. the casing...the upper part of the lcd actually has an aluminum bar so you can hold it by the lcd..
2. Not sure about all, but the T40 series has a light so you can work in the dark and see the keyboard..
3. they stay VERY cool in my experience...
4. Support is second to none..

too bad it's all over now

They are when the company buys them... BTW I got an e-bay catalog (yeah, I know WTF), and it had T-40s for about $2200 IIRC, that was new in box. YMMV and all that BS.

I second the support, one of my buttons on the touchpad started sticking. I called support and the very next day I had a new palmrest/touchpad.

I don't use a mouse with my laptop and my laptop is my only computer. so I don't have a mouse
. it is great to have a 12", i can just bring it to anywhere I want.

ok but for the average consumer they arnt,

lets see here
IBM T42 : 1600x1200 15.1 in screen, Pentium M 1.8 GHz 512 ram XP Pro 60 gig HDD... = ~3200$

Dell Inspiron 8600: 1920x1200 15.4 in screen, Pentium M 2.0GHz 512 Ram XP Pro 60gig... = ~1600$ - we got one last week

nothing about IMB justifys 2x the price

I think they actually prefer to ship you the new parts and let you do it than send you a box and let them fix it.

are you compare two laptop one with the retail with no discount and the other with discount+coupon?

Dell's have a much shorter lifetime that a thinkpad. Once you get a thinkpad you will never want to use another brand again.

600m's have the build quality of a $.25 toy you get in one of those dispensers outside Walmart. Seriously they are chintzy plastic trash. You push on the trackpad and it depresses below the plastic trim that houses it. The battery doesn't always fit tight in the housing and rattles around. You rest your hands on the front of a 600m and the plastic palm wrest bends.

Sure, it's lightweight, but at the sacrifice of any sort of durability or resilience that a thinkpad provides.

Yeh, the Dell's cheap. But you get what you pay for.

HAHAHAHA

Look at weights and portability. A T41 weighs ~4.5 pounds. An 8600 is over 50% heavier. DON'T undervalue portability.

IBMs page says 5.4 lbs, the Dell is ~8lbs and that does absoutly nothing to portability, what are you a 8 year old girly man? one of my physics books weighs more then 6lbs

and DaWhim, dell instant savings != Cupon

I travel. A LOT. I've done about 30 plane trips in the last 8 months. 3 pounds IS huge when are lugging a laptop around through airports constantly along with all your other stuff.

And I'm hardly a "girly" man. Thinner & lighter is invaluable when it comes to frequent traveling.

Oh - and sites I look at peg the T42 at $1500-$2000. Not $3200.

never mind for that. ibm is known for HIGH price. your probably have to add tax and shipping about $100 on that $3200 t42.

I feel my 3.7lbs ibm x30 is heavy. how about let try to use the laptop with one hand hold it and the other one to control?

actually, please call your laptop a notebook, it is too heavy for use on the laps. 😛

nice! but I don't think I go with a T series without SXGA+
how is the flexview? i heard t42 got the most beatiful screen out there. but then t series is just too big for my taste. yes, IT IS TOO BIG.

isn't it the only coating you can get with ibm? I think that's magnasium.
