Why are horses euthanized?

This question is brought on mostly in response to Barbaro's being euthanized today.

By no way am I an expert on any affairs equine, but it seems to be that a broken leg leads to euthanasia with a surprising degree of regularity. What is it about horses and breaking their legs that leads us to put them down so quickly?

The Google and the Ask.com, they do nothing. They tell me the hows, they tell me about the grieving process, but yeah... a little help with this one? I don't get it.

Because the leg won't repair correctly and they don't want the horse to live in pain the rest of it's life.

because it's more humane than to make them suffer with the pain of everyday life (in this case, walking around).

They get hoof/leg infections. Something to do with no weight on the hoof cause a bone to start poking through the bottom of the hoof.

Horses will die if they can't stand.

Stand, hell. Horses die if you look at them funny.

You could do surgery on a horse in a sterile OR and the thing would still get the equine equivalent of a cold, and then DIE from it.

So that's why they all have mouths/teeth that look like a horse?

Learn something new everyday I guess.

horses that can't move are pretty useless. They could wasily keep a horse alive like happens to a person who might be in a wheelchair or something if they had to have a leg amutated, but nobody really cares enough about horses to keep them alive just for its own sake when they cannot serve any usefull purposes. Alot of dogs and cats get euthanised if they get a disease that would be expesnive to treat, the same is true for horses (except since they are worth more people try alot harder).

I searched for "why are horses euthanized" and didn't think to specialize.

Thanks for the answer(s) though.

The healing process is very long and there are a lot of ways it can be screwed up.

At least they "euthanize" the horse nowadays and don't put a bullet in its head.

maybe because we haven't mastered animal health yet?

on another issue how pathetic has ESPN become that they are covering a freaking race horse. Its an animal but they watch and have "break news" has if it was some person.

I wonder what's going through the head of the reporter that is sent out to cover the piece. There career must be at low to be covering a horse.
