Why are guitar tabs so damn wrong all the time?

It's ridiculous.

My mom asked me to learn to play that song so I figured I'd just grab some tabs really fast. If you know how to play guitar...I suggest you pick one up and play that and tell me if it sounds ANYTHING like the opening of that song.

Now I remember why I quit using guitar tabs.

LOL!!!

Gotta love those ones too.

I guess I should just take the time to learn it myself...but really I don't understand why none of the websites actually test them out first.

Many sites have ratings for tabs. I can't imagine a site actually "testing" out tabs before posting them :s

I just played it, and it sounds exactly like the original!

Oh my goodness! RIAA is altering the sites so the tabs are off now. First they pass scrambled MP3's around on Kaaza and now this. What's next?

It's not the RIAA, it's the written music equivalent, whatever their name is. I really miss www.powertabs.net, but www.ultimate-guitar.com is almost as good.

edit: actually it looks like www.powertabs.net is back. before they were shut down a year or two ago they had the most accurate tabs I could find.

There was a site I used to visit awhile back, powertabs.net, that was really good. All of the tabs were created using the program PowerTab, which lets you play the tab as a MIDI file and view both the tab and sheet music to the song. Most of the tabs posted on there were direct transcriptions of the published sheet music, although the authors always claimed it was just "their interpretation" of the song. The mods would also remove tabs that everyone voted were wrong. Unfortunately I don't think the site is allowed to host most of the tabs anymore due to copyright issues.

EDIT: Doh, OREO beat me to it.

May favorite tabs are the ones that people post where the whole song is played on one string...wtf????

Anyway, I can play Words of Love. It's more of a "freestyle" song, so the singing really carries it. It's a an A - D - E progression. There's two guitars on that song, so it sounds like they (poorly) tried to guess what they were both doing.

Fingerpick with a bass-3-1-4 pattern with a singer and you should be golden.

It came back.

That's great to hear! PT helped me so much when I was learning how to play guitar 4-5 years ago. It was so nice to be able to play the tab when there was a solo that was really hard to piece all the notes together. Text tabs just don't compare :p

I still use Powertab. Just have to torrent the tab library. One of my favorite tools, next to Workshop Live
