Why are extremely bright people (aka super geniuses) generally nuts?

Because they know a lot of stuff, understand half of what they know, and have lived half the years of what we do.

QFT... more than half of the useless facts that I know can easily start with, "I have read it in a book", "I heard it on NPR/BBC", "It was in Scientific American", "It was on CNN", or "Dang if I know, but I think I got it from TV". 😛

There's a theory that genius is actually caused by a brain defect (like autism, just in another form). Brain structures in people with extremely high IQ tend to focus on a certain field that involves patterns. Parts of the brain that deal with patterns are larger and wired differently, but in return other parts of the brain are smaller and these people tend to be lacking in other aspects (socially, quirky behavior, etc- this might be where the "Mad Scientist" myth came about).

Discovery does a series about this subject once in a while- cool stuff.

That would make a lot of sense. An incredible amount of sense really.

As alluded to by several posters, I would say its mostly a myth. People just like to think that genius's are "stupid" in their own way. It makes them feel better about themselves.

Because they are unable to stop thinking about anything and everything that they come across? Over-analyzes things, which then becomes an obsession of some type?
I know this because I have a friend who thinks nonstop about stuff and only calms down when he plays video games that numb his brain down for him.

Hey, that's fine, but I don't know you.

😛

Very perfect description though. It's one reason I like computer games - it shuts up my mind. The game holds my focus, and everything else just goes away for awhile, my mind is finally quiet.

Smart people can be quite normal. Not all of them have to be nuts. OP, you watch too many movies 😉 😛

Personal experience not movies. I actually meet over 2000 new faces each week on average. Some I get to know a little too well.
