Why are EVGA GTX480's still being sold?

The reference EVGA 480 model is the only 480 available, but it has been consistently available around $200 or less for the last 6 months.

For a chip that was supposedly difficult to manufacture and expensive, do they really have that big of inventory pile built up and are moving through them or are they actually still producing GF100s?

look at it this way... every1 who got one probably posted on the forums and made it seem everyone had one but in reality only a small fraction of us gamers actually own one and at that time it came too late, too power hungry, too hot.that and allot of people already had 58XX's and thats also around the time bitcoin mining became popular which probably decreased the sales. so yes they do probably have a bit in back stock.

On a different note, if your willing to overlook the power/noise a $200 gtx480 is still a lot of bang for the buck. The later 480s can also be overclocked to match or slightly beat a stock 580 fairly easily. At the moment though a ~$200 dollar 7870 is probably a better way to go.

Do you think the 480s didnt sell as well as the 5870?

shows the gtx 400 series more popular than the 5800 series. The survey shows the 480 is over the 5870 and the 470 over the 5850.

steam has many many millions of users and the survey represents the percent of their user base using said GPUs. We know from this that without a doubt a lot of gtx480s are in use on the market. Since so many are still in use then the data suggest that nvidia could have actually sold a larger amount of GTX4XX than AMD had the 58XX. To further support this (and to cover any counter claims of high volume non gaming GPUs such as for Bit mining), we see that the discrete GPU market share for the past few yrs has been dominated by Nvidia GPUs. Quarter to quarter, the majority has been in nvidia's favor. Its been pretty steady nvidia market = 150% of AMDs. Which means for every AMD card sold nvidia sales 1.5 times. This has been pretty stead even through the fermi generation.

The data is strong but may not sway you. you may not agree with the data i present to you. you may not think its proof enough to say nvidia sold specifically more 4XX series cards than the 58XX. This is okay because i only want to prove than nvidia at least sold as many GTX4XX GPUs as AMD did their 58XX series. I think the data goes beyond proving at least that much. Therefor your statement is pretty much bull.

You could say i at least proved that much and possibly more.......

Hell yeah they're a good bang for the buck. I de-lidded mine (so worth the effort), slapped an Arctic Cooling Twin Turbo cooler on it (got it on sale for $28!), upped the voltage to 1.13V, and overclocked it by about 20%. Performs at stock GTX 580 levels, which is around the same as an HD 7950. Does not go above 70C in games, and stays below 80C on the "heaviest" possible load I can do with Furmark. I keep the fan at 100%, but you can barely hear it.

The ONLY downside about my GTX 480 is the power consumption.

Nvidia just made too many GTX 480s for the demand. Simple as that. It was still a great card despite the power consumption.

5870 is well above 480.

yeah i am happy with mine. I figure my pair is probably a little stronger then a 680. also On the positive side, the PCB/Card is built very well as far as vrm's and build quality compared to the 680. Overclocks very well as others have said.

The price point doesn't make sense though. You can get a 660 and be ahead of the 480.

Alot of the gpu's were made for workstation cards as well. And now they need to empty the channel of older stock, where buying the new thing is even more important in a business environment because of performance/watt on a large scale.

Using the Steam Survey in the way you used it (i.e., today's % data to imply total lifetime sales) is for sure wrong. It shows GTX670 has as much % as HD5850 in its lifetime. Think about that for a second. It also has HD6950 far outselling HD5850/5870 cards, which is highly doubtful. Steam Survey for the most part is good for developers to look at GPU trends, but to imply GPU market share based on lifetime sales from Steam is misleading. The person to whom I sold HD4890 only played Starcraft 2 (didn't have Steam). The person whom I sold HD6950 to also didn't have Steam. That means both of those cards are no longer registered on Steam despite being used for gaming. Steam can give us some idea as 1 data point but to use it as the most important data point is 100% wrong as it was already proven to be misleading last quarter -- Steam sales implied GTX670 and 680 sold more than the entire HD7000 series line since January but NV lost market share in discrete GPU space. There goes the accuracy of Steam.

I remember GTX470/480 had barely any market share on Steam even 3-4 months after launch and HD5800 series dominated but when market share numbers came out, NV gained market share and had larger market share in the discrete GPU space despite Steam showing the opposite. There have been plenty of times where Steam survey has been shown to be way off vs. real world market share data.

The only company which sells GTX480 on Newegg is EVGA. My guess is NV is selling off excess Quadro GF100 chips or excess left over GF100 chips and used EVGA as the premium partner to do it because they may have agreed or had excess boards left over. Since only EVGA is selling 480s, it's highly unlikely that NV would continue to manufacture GF100 specifically for EVGA.

Dude you can still buy AGP cards. Old stock can sit in inventories for a long, long time.

Why are 660's being sold? 480's are faster over 1080p and cheaper as well. The gluttony of them from EVGA is due to EVGA's step up program.

from what i see its about 20%-25% faster and when u oc a 670 itl close that gap down to about 5-10% so id still choose the 670 rather than deal with dual card setups... but im a hypocrit cause i know ill get another 670 down the road when prices drop hahaha
