Why are dual-layered DVD+/-Rs still so expensive?

Glad I never upgraded to a DL drive.

Dude WTF, do have a 2-4X DVD burner? Because just about any cheap DVD burner now is a DL burner.

I got one of the very first 4x DVD+R burners to come out. Cost me well over $200. I knew it was risky buying before the format war was over but at the time it didn't look like there was an end in sight and i needed a dvd burner to back up lots of data. I spent $90 for a pack of 50 DVD+Rs too. I plan on using this dvd burner until it doesn't work anymore.

Forget DL, it's worth upgrading to 16X DVD±R for $50. I've got an 8X DVD drive and it is irritating as hell. :| I couldn't take a 4X drive.

Doesn't bother me. Only take about 15-20min per dvd. I don't burn that often for it to become annoying. Plus I still have a bunch of the original dvd+rs that I bought for this drive which are 2.4x only. now that's annoying. I bought another 50 pack for cheap but they only burn at 8x anyway. No use in buying a 16x burner.

Heh... I still have an old 4x LiteOn drive around here - great for scanning 🙂
The latest burners aren't that much (NEC 3550A / BenQ DW1640/1650) - ~$31 (recent shop4tech deal on the 3550A) to ~$45.

I still have very few options when trying to backup DV tape after DV tape ( 9-13GB)
Fry's is selling Blu-Ray discs already. I was like, "WTF, they don't even sell the burners yet. 😕"

Hey man, as long as you're happy with the speed.

My Pioneer 105 (That's 4x, - media only), for whatever reason, decided to die. So I guess I need to grab a DL burner now (w00t, because I've been buying 16x discs for a long time) - but I still ain't gonna buy DL discs.

I just ran through my last spindle of 10 DL DVD-R's...doh.
now to wait for another 10 for $20 sale somewhere.
Heh... you and me both 😛
Although IINM, I got them for ~$1.60 a piece after cashback, rebate, rewards, etc.

Yeah, around $1.60 a piece seems to be the current norm. I picked up a spindle of 25 Memorex DVD+R DL for $40.

I'm sure what most people here are concerned about is that Blockbuster Rental + 1 DL disc < cost of movie.

Yeah, but I only buy Verbatim DL discs. Find it much easier to just do random burn quality checks every once in awhile rather than using questionable media and having to scan each and every disc.

I bet they'll become cheaper when a new format arises, IIRC CDRs didn't become cheap until DVD-R craze started to come out..

IIRC, CDRs were way cheaper (as in FAR) and better before DVDRs came on the scene.
