Why are drugs illegal?

First off let me say that I don't endorse harmful substances, but there are many herbal based plants that people could consume for recreational use that are safe. However I often wonder why ALL recreational drugs are illegal. If rec drug use was legal I'm 110% positive that the market would be flooded with FDA approved products that carry no harmful traits. The criminal element would be eliminated, the economy would be vastly improved, violent crimes and prositution rates would drop significantly. But thats getting away from original topic, why are drugs illegal?

Alcohol isn't illegal, tobacco isn't illegal.

As to the OP, this has been covered here many many times. Your answers can be found elsewhere.

1 part because people are too stupid for their own good.
1 part government that thinks it knows how to rule you better than you do.

only b/c if we tried to make them illegal we'd have another prohibition type era with rampant use plus crime...
alcohol use was actually up if i rember during prohibition......

Because the government (and by association, certain people) do not trust you and feel the need to protect you from yourself. It's the same reason we have driver seatbelt laws, and helmet laws.

It seems to me that the first point would be a compelling reason for the goverment to legalize drugs. With goverment resources and scientific research the public could be provided with safe products instead of purchasing questionable substances from even more questionable people.

And a third part is that taxing it would be too difficult now.

You mean that making things that people want to do illegal increases crime??!!!:Q

The only reason why marijuana is illegal and alcohol and tobacco are legal is because many lobbies pay lots of money to keep the status quo. The original reason why marijuana was made illegal is because back in the day cotton lobbies in addition to a few others were scared of hemp putting everybody out of business and paid a lot of money to have the government demonize hemp and it's sister plant marijuana.

To me thats exactly why drugs need to be legalized? I'm positive that it would cost far less money for the goverment to funnel its resources into researching safe drugs than chasing crack dealers and foreign street cartels.

Yep 1 minute of Googling would answer why marijuana was criminilzed (hint: not really for the public good).

I don't use anything stronger than caffeine and chocolate myself, but do think the double standard of "good" vs. "bad" drugs helps the cartels and big government more than it helps citizens.

drugs weren't illegal in the beginning. they were made illegal for the same reasons other things are made illegal, they are detrimental to society.

alcohol wasn't illegal, then it was, then they decided that keeping it illegal was creating more problems than it corrected.

as bad as the affect the dug war is having it isn't as bad as the affect legalizing would have. We can look to historical examples, China for example, to see this.

3 specific reasons:

1. Nosy people like to look down on their neighbors and tell them what to do.

2. Government likes control and to instill fear in the populace.

3. Corruption likes black markets.

Well....that's *A* reason...but certainly not the only reason.

It's still illegal because you can't measure accurate dosages, there is no way you could possibly tax it because of the easy ability to grow it and keep somewhat of a control on distribution, and because there is no easy way to accurately test for recent ingestion since it stays in your body for so long. Too hard to tell if somebody is driving "stoned".

Remember when opium was legal in China? Remember when cocaine was in coca-cola?

Yeah...there wasn't any of that vastly improved anything. If they were legal, well, we'd all be stoned right now and doing jack sh*t.

The end.

That's what's hindering the legalization efforts now, but back in the day nobody gave a sh!t about any of that, it was about $$$. I really wonder how the legalization status would be today had nobody cared about hemp.

I doubt if that would be the situation, billions of people drink alcohol around the world right now and alcohol is really not much different from rec. drugs.
