Why are dress shirts striped vertically and polo shirts horizontally?

Maybe because dress shirts would look funny with stripes running across but a line running down the middle where the buttons are.

Aesthetically, horizontal stripes just don't work well on longsleeve shirts.

long sleeve polo shirts (rugby shirts) are horizontally striped

Well after I thought about it, I've never remember seeing a long or short sleeve shirt with horizontal stripes. Not even the casual ones.

They probably did exist at one point in time or another but it was soon found out that they didn't sell very well.

dress shirt with horizontal stripe makes you look fatter. Polo shirt are not cut the same way so it doesn't have as adverse an effect as dress shirt.
