Why are corded mice thought to be better for gaming?

I have always loved the different cordless mice I have had over the years. I am building a new game rig an am looking at the MX1000. While reading threads here it seems that a lot of gamers prefer a corded mouse. Why? I have never had any lag problems or anything like that with my cordless ones.

In 1 word. Weight. Logitech has already solve the problem with cordless lag, but they still haven't inventented weightless batteries. The weight of the battery in the cordless mouse can be annoying to some and downright handicapping to others. As for me? I use MX700 to play FPS, which is very mouse orientated game. I can get used to the weight of the mouse by increasing the acceleration and speed of the mouse. However, some people just doesn't feel "right" with a heavier mouse.

Personally, here's my pro/con of my MX700:

Pro - Added weight gives me extra precision. The extra weight allows me to have sturdier aim and more accurate small movements. Best used as sniper or long-range shoot out.
Con - Added weight degrades my ability to react quickly. Even with tweaks in the setting, the weight decreases my reaction speed.

Mud, I agree with you about the cord. It's a matter of personal preference really. Don't let anyone tell you that a cordless mouse will lower your frag count, that's silly. Find what works best for you. I currently have a Razer Boomslang 2100, but it's on it's way out and will be replaced by a MX1000 soon.

i like the extra weight.

for gaming, the mx1000 can be good or bad. it all depends on your mouse usage/habits. when playing an FPS, do you use low to very low sensitivity? do you have to pick up the mouse and set it back down to continue a turn? if you do, stay away from the mx1000. there is an issue with what i believe is the laser turn off when the mouse looses contact with a service and has a SLIGHT delay (.5 second) in turning the laser back on.

in nearly any application, this is negable, but for myself, in FPS, is very annoying (if you pick straight up and straight down, its harder to notice, but when i pick it up in a FPS, i tend to pick up the mouse as i continue pushing the mouse and as i'm setting it down, keeping a fluid movement and the mouse meeting the surface at 45 or less degrees).

if you don't pick up your mouse, then i believe the mx1000 is great. i purchased and mx1000 and loved it (ended up returning because of the pickup/setdown delay and continue to use my mx700). it is supperior to the mx700 in all up the pickup/set down delay. better ergonomics, longer lasting battery, a battery life indicator and what i thought was smoother movement.

I have mx700 and a friend of mine has mx1000. personally depending on what game i'm playing I will use either my mx700 or my USB. I keep both because of I think I do better with FPS games with my mx700, but playing games like StarCraft I use my USB. my buddy has mx1000 and plays FPS constantly, he says he will never go back(considering he just bought his first non-trackball, non-wired mouse). I feel more response with my mx700, only thing that gets annoying is forgetting to charge the battery. 🙂 It lasts 2-3 days though so most of the time i'm good.

I am a cord guy also. I perfer the MX510..one great gaming mouse. No batteries, no signal interferrence, and no lag!!!

There was a mouse pad with a sprung boom that suspended the cord. Voila - feels just like a cordless 😉 ... I use a trackball and don't notice the cord at all 😀 .
.bh.

I agree it being the weight. Although MX1000 gets around this issue by using light lithium batteries. It weighs significantly less than the MX700 and the battery life lasts about 5x longer!
That's the greatest advantage to the MX1000, not the laser tracks better gimmick.

The weight is the biggest thing for me. I would love to lose the cord, but not until the weight of the mouse is down closer to 120-130 grams. Here's a rundown of the weights of the MX510, MX700 and MX1000:

MX510 - 125g (does not include cable weight)
MX700 - 176g
MX1000 - 171g

Does anyone know the weight of the MS Wireless Optical Intellimouse 4.0? Their recent corded mice are lightweight compared to logitech's offerings. Maybe they have a mouse in the "sweet spot."

Weight? Somewhat.

Mostly refresh rates. This same time a year ago, there was some real discepancies between the refresh rates of a cordless mouse to that of a corded one.

Example: I had been using a cordless mouse for a while in CS. I noticed I just wasn't as good as I had used to be. I plugged in my old PoS corded mouse, and within minutes I was playing better. I did some research and found that if the mouse refresh can't keep up with the FPS on the screen, the mouse has to essentially skip pixels (at least that's what it ultimately).

Nowadays, cordless is just as fast. Personal preference.

The MX1000 is a fine cordless mouse and I don`t have any lag with mine, however for gaming the ideal mouse should be light(quicker to move it around, response wise) and you don`t have to worry about battery life at all).

Lag is also a factor on older cordless mice as well.

Bottom line for gaming if you must go cordless use the Logitech MX1000 or MX700,for corded the MX510 or Razer Diamondback are the top two choices.

Firing squad did a mx1000 review and said that it's just as good as any corded mouse.

I use an mx700 and I like the weight.

I'm using the MX510, too. I don't find it much better than my Intellimouse corded, though. Both are infinitely better than my Intellimouse cordless, though, which is heavy and I hate the feel of the scroll wheel. I only use it for HTPC stuff, not when I'm "at the computer." Can't speak to the gaming, though.

I just weighed my 2.0 and it's about 5.7 oz. with batteries. I guess that's about 160 gm. It feels too heavy to me. I'm used to the corded optical mice and use them when I can.

Weight doesn't bother me, but even when i tried out the MX1000, my 510 still seemed more precise.

That could very well be because i was used to my 510, or because i refuse to install the software, but that's why i kept my MX510.
