If some small percentage of the population (4%, or 2% if we are talking strictly gay) acted like this I somehow doubt it would have been considered a problem worth prohibiting.

And of course you are ignoring the numerous historical accounts of supposedly straight men indulging in the gay sex in the past. See Ancient Greece.

But poor men could afford to go to the spa and have boytoys?:hmm:

If they were indulging in gay sex, how does this make them straight? Bisexual maybe, but straight, definetly not. Unless you equate being a top as being straight, and some in denile closet cases actually think like this. So you're not alone in this false assumption. And hey, as long as you don't blow, but get blowed, you're still straight, too!

And even poor men went to the public baths, and tipping the scrubbing bubble boy toys who worked there was optional. ;)

Color me suspicious of any post about sexual prohibitions from someone that calls themselves "Apple of Sodom"...

Brian

Apple of Sodom has meany meanings. It is a type of fruit. It is also a Manson song that is about temptation, giving in and wanting the unattainable.

I've got something you can never eat, Brian.

Always a possibility. If God is part of an advanced alien race that's capable of creating Universes for fun, or as portable power sources, there may well be young children here and there, playing with their "Playskool Littlest Universe" kits.

Or middle school science students.

Or scientists that just coasted through undergrad.

Or sociopaths.

Yes, the scariest thought of them all is that there is a God and he really is as petty, mean, and cruel as the Bible portrayed him to be.

Perhaps there is a family of god's and ours is that one fuck up that is in every family (FYI: if you can't name the one in yours, sorry, but it's you).

I would be afraid to eat your sodomy fruit. But then, I don't care much for clean apples that haven't been sodomized first, so there's that. Wouldn't sodomy bananas or cucumbers be a lot easier for you to manage? I bet it's embarrassing when you get a bushel of apples all stuck up in there.

I can not answer this question without spewing forth vitriolic vile virulent venom towards "religion" that humankind has used as a basis to justify crimes against humanity.

Thus, I will say that the people who had the power thought those things were "icky", so they wrote down in their holy book "don't do these things because they are icky."

The idea of gay/straight sexual orientation as an identity is a modern concept.

I will write this assuming you are straight; but feel free to reverse it if you are gay. What is the difference between letting a guy give you a BJ instead of a woman?

Because the bible tells us to be ashamed of basic human desires and glorifies violence and murder.

Sex has consequences. And in fact sex often has consequences that impact other people.

Knowing this it should be obvious why society has frequently chosen to regulate how/where/with who sexual activity is acceptable. As religion tend to provide a set of rules to live by. It should be obvious why this rulebook extends to sexual activity.

This, exactly this. This thread has to be a troll because it's so obvious what impure thoughts and sex can lead to (adultery, illegitimate kids, blah blah blah).

YARTT (Yet another religion troll thread)

But you already said supposedly straight men were engaging in gay sex in ancient times. Make up your mind already, which is it? So why are you ascribing a modern concept to an ancient situation at all if that's the case? Flip flop much?

Or are we really talking about marrying toasters in ancient Greece now?

Reality is that Robert Heinlein got it right: "Sin lies only in hurting others unnecessarily. All other sins are invented nonsense."

Actually, the definition of Sin is to Go Astray.

Thats it. Thats all it is. Going astray.

Everything else is other humans wanting to control you.

It's due to the making Sacred the assertions of Ancients who were motivated by Social and Political needs. A society seeking lasting Power in a tumultuous region requires a high birth rate to maintain Military capability.

Because religion works best if there are some scapegoats who you can blame for everything bad happening to you, and a god that will reward you for fighting the evil in the world.

My guess is that there was a homophobe in power and saw a chance to make something he didn't like a sin. Since it only effected a minority there wouldn't really be too much opposition.

I understand that there are some things that are considered sins that logically should be - they do harm to others. I think we can all agree, atheist or theist, that murder is a sin (or wrong, or whatever word you want to use.) Same with theft. But what makes homosexuality such a sin? I understand the bible says it is a sin, but why? What does it hurt?

Don't say it is unnaturaly because homosexuality occurs in nature. Why, specifically, is homosexuality a sin? This is not troll bait either. I was raised in a Christian home and have mostly traditional, Christian aligned values. I am pretty heterosexual so it isn't a pesonal struggle. I simply never understood why being gay was so sinful, other than because the bible says to stone queers.

I don't know why the bible says it's a sin.... my opinion you can take the bible and throw it in the trash because that is where it belongs.

However, homosexuality is not a good or right or natural thing. Perhaps that is why the bible speaks against it. You could compare being gay to being really fat or having sex with your mom. It is entirely up to you if you want to do it, but all of them are abnormal, disgusting, unhealthy, and not the way things are supposed to be. These things should not be celebrated.

It's because Jesus came along and said all this great Buddhist stuff that had nothing to do with sex and then this fucking asshole named Paul came along after him and said all this stupid shit that Jesus never said and that Christians take seriously.

'cause they're taboo. Like a guy told me once, he wouldn't consider doing it with boys because once you do, it becomes an issue... "am I, do I?" Myself, I am attracted to girls. I'd rather not have that tension with guys if I were ambivalent. I'm perfectly satisfied to be unqualified hetero.
