Why are car rentals so expensive right now?

I've been to sites like travelocity and orbitz but everywhere i go the rates are super expensive. The only reason i can think of is because i'm trying to reserve it for tomorrow and i want it for 2 weeks for a trip from Seattle to LA. So maybe the fact that its such very short notice and its after a major holiday in the summer? The lowest price i've seen is around $400/week for the economy car. Any suggestions for other sites to check or am i basically SOL for leaving tomorrow without having to max out the credit card?
 
rentawreck would of been a nice option, but i wanted a one-way reservation (becuase i'm going to stay a couple months down there) and they don't do one-way

ah well, guess i'll take the train or bus and then rent one when i'm down there...

After looking at the cheapest fare again, $343/week with Advantage Rent-A-Car i think i'll go ahead and book it. 🙂
