<< If you worms expect the consumers to eat the cost of fixing those engines, you are INSANE! WTF is wrong with you? Toyota fan boys to a fault! They pay tens of thousands for a car, it pukes inside of a couple years and they're supposed to pay for the new engine? I DON'T THINK SO! >>

Toyota is arrogant and full of themselves. People are paying extra expecting quality. Take away quality, and toyotas are just a bunch of overpriced boring cars.

I've never owned a Toyota in my life, nor have i any plans to do so immediately in the future. I'm far from a "Toyota fan boy."

Yeah, they are supposed to pay for a new engine. That's what happens when you don't change your oil.

bump for NFS4...

BTW, if the entire problem could be solved by $25 (synthetic oil and a filter), why isnt it?

Actually, as a Honda fanboy (STOCK Honda, mind you, none of that ricer sh!t) I really wouldn't mind not having Toyota around. My deal with this story is thus: She undeniably changed the oil at the recommended intervals (before thos intervals actually). However, I question first of all the oil change place that failed to notice that the oil was coming out as sludge. There would be a noticeable deterioration in the quality of oil being drained from the engine before the engine completely sludged up. Still, that's not the consumer's fault. I do think that by driving with the oil light on, that this particular person (not every person) should have her warranty voided. Had she shut the engine down when the light came on, it would not be her fault, IMO. However, she drove the vehicle with the oil light on, there is no manual that comes close to allowing that. I also question the maintenance (discounting oil) given the fact that she was not smart enough to stop driving when the no oil pressure light came on. The sludge is technically Toyota's problem, but in the case of this particular, individual woman, I think that by driving with the oil light on she should have her waranty voided. IMO driving with the oil light on is more than sufficient to constitute severe owner abuse.

<< Alright Nightbreed and sbastedo: I did read the entire article, BUT YOU OBVIOUSLY DID NOT. Nice selective pasting you have. >>

Firstly, my nick is KnightBreed. Secondly, what the hell are you talking about? I did read the article and posted the exact same quote you did. Read my post above yours.

<<I still say its not Toyota's fault. It doesn't say anything on a boxed processor kit about cleaning the dust off your fan, but if it buids up too much and frys your system its still your fault for improper maintanence not the manufacture's falut. >>

Read the damn article and try to comprehend this time. SHE DID MAINTAIN IT PROPERLY, ACCORDING TO TOYOTA'S OWN MANUAL. She changed the oil between 4-6000 miles. The manual specifies 7500. 5000 for "severe" driving conditions, and if you read the manual's definition of "severe", she didn't meet it. So she did nothing wrong.
Toyota owes her an engine, period.
Jiffy lube may not have the best mechanics, but they change more oil than anyone else, and 99.9% of the time, they do it right. So where she had it changed shouldn't matter. She has the receipts, end of story.

There is absolutely a problem with those engines and sludge. Going 1 or 2 thousand miles over on an oil change occasionally shouldn't amount to a hill of beans, especially with the additives oil has in it these days.

It's a design flaw in the engine, nothing more.

As far as her driving with the light on, different story. I didn't see where Toyota blamed her for that; in fact, they blamed her for not changing the oil properly.

Kind of an odd cooincidence that nearly all the people who are too lazy or stupid to change their oil all bought Toyotas with the same engines in the same time frame.

<< Although it's not clear why the two Toyota engines are so susceptible to sludge buildup, some independent experts say the concentration of complaints within two engines and a narrow time band points to either a design flaw or a quality defect. >>

Okay, those of you who are categorically blaming the plaintiff and defending Toyota either have not read the article or have some pretty rarified ideas about maintenance. If the carmaker says that an oil change every 7,500 miles is enough, and I change the oil every 4,000 - 6,000 miles, I do NOT expect to be on the hook for a new engine after 30,000 miles. Most mechanics will tell you that a 5,000-mile interval is plenty, so I can't see any legitimate basis for Toyota to refuse to pay for this.

Thats great. Now show us someone (from that article, if possible) who doesnt have their oil change receipts.
