Why are cameros and firebirds called F-Bodies?

Just the class chassis GM designed them on.

Cavilers and Sunfires are J bodies while Grand Prix's and the like are W-Bodys...

A lot of domestic manufacturers have their chassis coded by letters. Older mopars up until the late 80s were referred to as their chassis letter sometimes, and I know Chevy names them similarly as well.

It's Camaro. And, yes, f-body refers to platform designation. Corvette = Y-body.

i always thought the coverette was the J body. I didnt even know sunfires and cavelires had letter designatd body styles. Oh well.. shows what i know about domestic cars.

I think they all do, it just depends on which ones become well known and which don't.

C/K - Trucks; C=2wd, K=4wd
S - GMC Sonoma, Jimmy & Envoy and the Chevrolet S-10 and Blazer
N - Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, and Pontiac Grand Am
W- Buick Century, Buick Regal, Chevrolet Impala, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Oldsmobile Intrigue and Pontiac Grand Prix
J - Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire
Y - Chevrolet Corvette
