Why are bread & butter chips called bread & butter chips? (the pickles, not potato chips or anything like that)

Yeah, but bread and butter chips are slices of pickles. It doesn't have the same connection.

I have no idea, around here they're just called "pickles". I've never heard "Bread and Butter Chips" before in my life.

Everything you wanted to know about Bread & Butter chips, but were afraid to ask...
Q: Where does the term 'bread & butter' come from?
A: The term bread and butter pickles actually comes from Sweden's smorgasbord -- which is a table of delicacies eaten as appetizers before dinner. Included are several kinds of breads and butter, as well as pickled vegetables, (including pickled cucumbers) pickled and smoked fish and meats. Smorgasbord means "bread and butter table." Here in the U.S., of course, smorgasbord means a buffet-style meal.

Because it's a British term. "Chips" = "French Fries" :)

I don't know why is they?

Because crap grammar makes baby jesus cry.

Actually coldcut was correct in saying "is". When a meal is referred to as a unit, even if words in the name of the meal are plural, you treat the meal's name as singular. Example:

Kraft Shells and Cheese with hotdogs is one of my favorite dishes.
