They can bark, they just don't. Also don't mistake 'barkless' for 'noiseless' because they can be real loud whan they want.

Yeah, they make weird howling noises. I thought they actually could not bark. Why would I chose not to bark if I had the ability to do so?

I've read several theories why they don't bark, but the one that makes the most sense to me is the genetic one. So the theory goes that the breed has been around since before humans selected for the gene that makes dogs bark a lot.

I worked in a place that kept a Basenji in the office. Cute and fun dog... but that one definitely barked on occasion. Shocked the owners when it first barked.
