i cant tell you anything that will magically make you believe.. i can only help with things like... telling you that, you can never convince someone of believing/non belief, because of the simple fact that, what we decipher as "real" is built within us... so you either believe or you don't... that part happens in the delay between reality and para/metareality (inner reality) (i dont know the word for it.. i'm just saying you control the switch in witch the God exists or doesn't :)

that was kind of the whole point :)

I agree with the notion that what I perceive as the physical universe is an interpretation of the physical stimuli that my senses feed into my brain. But that does not mean that I can imagine the leprechaun king, and then he will actually appear with his magical decanter of never ending Jameson.
Seriously, we all know that there is no leprechaun king, no matter how much I want to meet him. And if I want to get some Jameson, I have to buy it at the liquor store. There is such a thing as a physical reality. I really don’t control the switch in which God exists or it doesn’t (but you do get +2 points for a surprise rhyme). If you hold a gun to my mother’s head and tell me that you’ll kill her unless I say that 2+2=5 I will say that I do to get you to put the gun down, but I’m lying zanejohnson. 2+2 does not equal 5.
No amount of day dreaming and wishing will change the world. The world is what it is. Humans can change the world only by manipulating the physical building blocks that it is made of. It is not a matter of how my mind interprets the physical universe. I know someone that is color blind, and cannot see red. Just because his mind cannot see red that does not mean that the color does not exist. I can physically show that the existence of the color red in ways that my color blind friend can observe (by measuring the wave length of light), even if his mind’s eye can not perceive it. But there is no physical evidence for the leprechaun king, even if I really want there to be. No matter how much time I spend drinking Jameson and dreaming of the emerald Castle, I will not cause it to be. I’ll just wake up the next day with a really bad hangover.
Sorry zanejohnson, I loving making up stories too, but really seriously, there is no leprechaun king. (And I think we’ve really drifted off topic, sorry to the OP).

quit thinking physical world.. your imaginary world is just as important.. if you believe there is a leprechaun king, then there is.. if you believe there is God, then there is... there's just no acknowledging it and then saying, wait... i dont believe that..
That doesn't make any sense. You're effectively saying that thinking about anything at all makes it real. I can think about unicorns, but that doesn't mean I believe in them, nor does it make them exist. I can imagine myself winning the lottery, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen. Scientists have hypotheses all the time, but they don't always make it through the testing phase. So to say that thinking about a concept of God automatically makes that God real, well, that's just abject stupidity. If you are incapable of thinking about something without it becoming real, wait until the drugs wear off and try again.

Atheists tend to be former Christians. That's the thing.

Most likely have vivid memories of the terror they felt when being told about the 2nd coming of Christ. I know that I did.

In my case, the theory of evolution was an escape hatch from the nightmare vision of Christianity, where even good people go to hell because they haven't accepted Jesus. That really is a nightmare btw.

Of course, plenty of other religious traditions have an emphasis on evil and demons. And yet, I really do think that the Christian notion that without Jesus even good people go to hell is uniquely shitty and worthy of derision.

Because the Bible plainly states Marriage is between a man and a woman and they seem to think that they should be exempted from such rules for some reason.

Just out of curiosity, what do you mean when you say atheists are obsessed with hating Christians?
Have atheists claimed that Christians deserve to suffer for all eternity if they don’t accept evolution? Or have atheists burned people at the stake for committing heretical logical fallacies? Do Atheists protest at the funerals of soldiers waving signs that the spirit of philosophical naturalism hates Christians? Have Atheists systematically protected, covered up, and enabled child molesters in the National Academy of Science? Have Atheists tried to promote making it illegal for Christians to marry each other?
What exactly is it that Atheists are doing to hate on Christians?

Awwww, how cute!

I just wish to clarify: We hate on all religions, not just Christianity.

Also, if you don't want us to hate on you, stop hating on us, stop trying to convert us, and for the love of FSM, stop trying to change our laws to force compliance with your beliefs!
I'm A Christian and proud of it and I say that to easily let everyone know where I stand.
My response to this idea of pushing beliefs into law is that it works both ways. You vote for and therefore support certain lifestyles or laws that stem from what you believe. As a Christian I do the same. I dont argue that you shouldn't be allowed to do that and that's what people argue about Christianity.
As for Christians hating on people in sure you could find a few just as you could find a few examples of other behavior that's atypical of Christians, doesn't mean the majority is that way.

But back on topic i would have to agree with the op that for something that people think is make believe they can really get quite upset about it. Most people don't and fortunately this forum isnt a good representation of the whole but rather of who likes to talk the most.

see: gay marriage
see: sunday alcohol sales

If you don't believe in gay marriage or sunday alcohol sales, don't get married to the same sex and don't buy alcohol on sunday. don't force your goddamn beliefs down everyone else's throat.

we hate them because they hate us

That's actually a good point. Atheists and people of other religions have a pretty good reason to hate Christians considering they believe that not accepting Jeebus Chrism as your whore of saviors means you spend an eternity in hell.

That's the type of shit you say to someone who spills your beer. That's fucked up.

I'm sure they were persecuted by more damned atheists who were just saying that they were religious. :awe:

(And Christians are immune to any of this wrongdoing. If one does something amoral, "He wasn't a true Christian" or "But he asked for forgiveness, so it's ok now.")

No, you haven't been helping out with our activities schedule because you have been missing meetings.

We're going to try for a combo-hit: A witch burning at the next soldier's funeral protest, then afterward we're going to be baking some banana muffins.

i dont worship any visual idol (ie. jesus, buddha, krishna, etc) but i think every one of those religions is representative of the one true God, who's not even a being per say, more an idea, and the grease that lubricates the wheels of life/time/light/aging/rebirth/the thousands of lifes we live in this "cycle"

I'll take 2 of whatever you are smoking please :p.... and a hotdog.

You mean to say you are a christian and you don't hate gays? I'm confused, your magic book specifically tells you that you should do all sorts of terrible things to these people with stones and stuff. Just to remind you (i'm sure you already knew this because you are a good christian and memorized the whole thing) this is exactly what your bible says.

If a man has sexual intercourse with a male as one has sexual intercourse with a woman, 25 the two of them have committed an abomination. They must be put to death; their blood guilt is on themselves.

So I think you have a decision to make, either you are a christian and you hate gays and believe they should all be killed or you aren't a christian please make your mind up.

Speaking of barren idols.

This causes a lot of problems.

I have seen American Indians sadly defend their traditional religion as NOT pagan. This is because the white settlers that they had encountered kept on denigrating them as pagans.

But furthermore, it encourages people to be negative and critical of the human spirit. It is the same impulse which makes religious police in Saudi Arabia throw acid on women who walk around uncovered.

I don't. But then again I'm not a true atheist because I don't denounce the possibility of a supreme being of some sort I just leave it at I don't know and I guess it could be a possibility. I'm just not a fan of organized religion. I do what I can to be, what I consider, a good person and leave it at that. I don't care what other people choose to believe as long as they don't try to force their beliefs on me.

I suppose you also have a 3rd option, it is actually quite popular nowadays. You can live your life according to the bits of the bible you find palatable and just completly fucking ignore all the other bits as they are obviously irrelevant.

For bonus points you can start argueing that the bible doesn't really say the world is a few thousand years old (now there is actual indeniable proof to prove this is blatantly wrong). Instead just claim that the bible isn't actually supposed to be taken literally on this point although all the other bits are supposed to be taken litterally (apart from the aforementioned bits that you just turn a blind eye to because you realise that you don't like them so everyone else is allowed to ignore them aswell)

I can agree with the laws thing..

Atheists don't hate Christians. They hate religious people who try to force religion down their throats.

Thank you.

If you would have kept your thoughts to yourself, he wouldn't have made that comment. Religious people tend to push their beliefs on others, whether its wanted or not. Just don't be shocked when they respond in a way that you don't want.

So you can force your hateful thoughts down my throat, but if I ask a question reasonably then fuck me?

Tell you what, OP. You explain to me why Christians are so obsessed with white supremacy and establishing an evangelical Christian theocracy, and I'll tell you why there are atheists who hate christians.

Lol STFU jackass

Because there are thousands of pictures on the net of "so far up their own arses i'm surprised they aren't inside out" retarded , misinformed, hypocritical christians holding up signs telling every other person in the world how they should live their fucking life. Yes I am aware this doesn't represent all christians but until they ostracise these people instead of ignoring them I am going to tar them all with the same brush.

I had it shoved down my throat from the age of 4-11 at primary school and then had to learn about christianity and various other religions at secondary school in a thinly veiled attempt at indoctrination.

Rant over :p

A sort of on topic song....

So if I run into a mouth-breathing, hipster douchebag Atheist getting coffee in the morning, does that give me permission to hit every Atheist I run into?

Because God isn't a Secularist and that really gets on our nerves.

Wut?
