why are american roads backwards

What drove (pardon the pun) us to do it different from other countries, would it not make it easier for automobile manufacturers to have them all on the same side of the car?

We're not different than most other countries. Most drive on the right like we do.

England, Japan, and Australia are the main ones that drive on the left. The rest of Europe drives on the right.
