Why are all the crappy camera stores in Brooklyn allowed to stay open?

They close, reopen under new management by family member\friend. Change names, move. Close down, reopen with same management.

I just go to B&H.

Indeed. B&H is the best.

I purchased equipment from one once. It worked out ok, but they did try to upsell me on a bunch of stuff.

Just don't order from someone other than B&H and you will be fine. Trying to find a deal amongst the rest is just a waste of time. Camera stuff isn't cheap...and if you find it cheap someplace (especially in NY), it is probably a scam (or normal business operations apparantly in NY).

So what exactly is the deal with these places? Are they just fronts for money laundering? I remember seeing the abundance of camera dealers in Manhattan and thinking, "This market can't possibly need this many camera stores."
