Why are 19 inch server rack enclosures SO expensive?

I see a large standard PC case with 13 internal 3.5" for abotu 300 bucks. Why dont they make rack enclosures for homes? Sure, its not gonna be as good but then again homes arent suppose to be 24/7.

You mean like any of these?

Any server chassis with a crapton of drive bays is probably going to be a hotswap chassis for NAS builds. The server chassis themselves aren't terribly expensive, but the hardware and wiring for a bunch of hot swap bays is.

This one would probably be a good compromise. 6 internal 3.5" bays, and you could put a 4-in-3 module in the external 5.25" bays as well, giving you a 10-HD rack mount chassis for around $100. (Or you could just stick with the internal HDDs and drop in some Blue-Ray drives for bath ripping/encoding.)

Unless I'm misunderstanding your problem...?

That's not expensive for that enclosure new.
Buy an off brand.
Buy used.
Buy local.
Buy Ebay.
Buy a shorter rack.

You have a myriad of choices. :)

Not to mention if for home there are shorter versions of that style rack.

eBay has the shipping problem due to weight.
Nonsense.
Ebay doesn't do the shipping or determine how it is shipped.
The seller decides that.
Something that size is normally shipped freight, UPS oversize, or FedEx oversize.
"Local Pickup Only" indicates the seller doesn't want to be bothered with arranging shipping.

Racks are expensive when you want them, and worthless when you want to sell them.

Set up IFTTT to troll local Craigslist and eBay listings.

About 6-7 years back I got a 32U 4-post with a 2U 1500VA UPS, 3ea 4U chassis with rails (they had Athlon 700 servers in them, garbage), three fixed 2-post shelves, 1 slideout 4-post shelf, two workbench power strips, a 16-port 10/100 switch and 8-port VGA/PS2 KVM, set of 9 KVM cables, complete set of power cables and dual ethernet cables for every machine, and it was about $300 for the lot.

That was to replace my $50 old-ass Compaq 48U 4-post... now that thing was just way too big all around. Kept the kids out of my stuff though.

The local pickup option is your friend on items like that. Plus, you get to inspect it in person for damage.
Local pickup is nonexisting here.

Nonsense.

What I ment is that by its nature (eBay, Amazon, etc. any online store) has a shipping problem due to weight.

It's roughly 10 times the size of a PC case, therefore 10 times the price would seem to make sense, wouldn't it?

I'll here in the US, it's cheaper to rent a truck and drive to another state (400mi) and pick up a used one than buying a new one. Not sure how far you looked when "local" searching, but that may be worth considering.
