Why a HD 3870? Because they are occasionally in stock like the 8800GT, except that this is my second order that has been pushed back... Sites really need to update their "in stock."

Ordered last Thursday, site says ground is 2-4 business days shipping. UPS guy came today. With an exercise machine. For my dad. NOW, the site says 2+weeks shipping. I can only hope that I get it tomorrow or I will have to wait another 2 weeks.

Bottom line is that we all know there isn't a huge difference between the 3870 and 8800, they're at the very least playing in the same league. If Far Cry 2 comes out, and it runs like crap on the 3870, chances are the people that spent another 50-70$ on that 8800 won't be running it well either.

IMHO, all this video card religion is bunk. Like anything else in electronics do all the research & purchase what fits your needs not the needs of others.

 Best post so far!

Not really. The OP was asking why anyone would purchase the 3870 which is a valid question.

Agreed... There is no video card religion going on here. This is however the video section of a tech forum, so you might find people offering different views and opinions on video cards.

From what I can tell, the consensus regarding the HD3870 vs. the 8800GT is that if you can find an HD3870 for substantially cheaper than an 8800GT then go for it. If not, the GT is a slighter faster card overall. This seems like pretty level headed advise to me.
