Why AMD 64 vs. Mobile XP

I'm just wondering what would be gains for 64 versus mobile xp in terms of clock speed?
I'm majorly running a number crunching program and mostly interested in faster cpu. I have seen lot of people who overclock mobile xp 2500-2600 up to 2.5 GHz while equivalent 64 only reaches around 2.2Ghz.
Is there any noticeable difference in speed?
Thanks.

Yes you will see a big difference between a Mobile XP at 2.5ghz and a Mobile or Desktop 64 at 2.5ghz

If all you do is browse you won't notice a difference. But on next generation games like Doom 3 video, systems are being limited by CPUs.

It seems that almost all Newcastle cores are reaching 2.4-2.5 ghz without a lot of problems. Even at 2.2 ghz...the A64 will still outperform any mobile barton on air.

I don't know how you can beat this 64-BIT BUNDLE from mwave.com

AMD ATHLON 64 2800+ RETAIL
FARCRY PC GAME
CHAINTECH VNF3-250

$206.00

And OC to 2400 to 2600 is almost guarnteed, which no OCed barton can touch. http

Yes, currently I own an amd xp 2500+ o'ced to 2.2. i runs newer gen. games well such as doom 3 paired with my 9800 pro. but an amd 64 could beat it any day do to the newer technology. No mattter if it is 300mhz faster and so on.

I'm carefully looking at the price drops and ups for AMD 64 now. Probably I will be end up buying another AMD system. However, the price of mobile XP is consistently droppint too. I'm not quite sure what would be the price/performance ratio for buying AMD 64.
Thanks for your comments anyway.

Yeah, the mobile Barton's performance just isn't that good anymore. Heck, even the Socket 754 Sempron 3100+ overclocked is easily faster than your average mobile Barton OC. If you're going to be buying a new CPU and motherboard you'd might as well go with a new Socket 754/939.

Now if you've already got a decent AXP system and just need a CPU upgrade its hard to beat a $100 mobile Athlon 2600+.

As someone who owns and uses a Mobile XP at 2500mhz daily, I've gotta tell you that an A64 3200+ at stock speed feels faster than my computer. My uncle just got one and I used it to work in AutoCAD for a bit. I was amazed at the difference. The system was much more responsive, and things loaded up much faster.

That deal at mwave is definitely very nice. :D

I run my Mobile 2600+ @ 2.6GHz w/ a Gainward GS 6800GT @ 420/1200 and I can't justify upgrading my CPU just yet...

Athlon XP/MP = 32bit
Athlon 64 = 64bit

Why are you trying to compare 2 different versions? lol. Obviously the 64bit is going to be faster, but with 64bit windows only in beta right now, once a final release is done I think that the 64's will increase in performance. But Ahtlon's, Seprons's, etc.. are just for regular use, AKA Regular user. Right now I don't feel like spending $400 on an AMD64 system lol

AMD 64 will always win against a 32bit AMD system.

Eh? The 64-bitness of the Athlon 64 isn't in question, nor does it make the Athlon 64 more desirable than mobile XPs at this time. The Athlon 64 is a better 32-bit processor than the Mobile XP, period.

It is perfectly acceptable to compare/contrast the Athlon 64 with the mobile XP when it comes to 32-bit applications.

64 bitness is da shizzle for future but no effect right now unless you use an alternate OS and apps coded for it. The main thing making A64 20% clock/clock faster than a barton is on board mem controller.

I agree with Zebo, the A64s do more work per clock than do the XP's (both mobile and not) regardless of bit-width. This translates directly into faster 32-bit computing.

go buy a nintendo 64 cause it says 64 in the name :)

the original socket 754 64's are about 20% faster per clock across the board. they also don't take as much of a hit from using higher latency or slower ram. the 939 processors are supposed to be 5% faster and 90 nm are also supposed to be 5 % faster(slight overestimate?). 1 meg cache, which they will use in the 4000 and fx models gives around 3% usually. so a 90 mn 1 meg cahce on 939 will probly give you upwards of 30% performace increase over the athlon xp at same clock

Hey N64's were great, back in the glory days of 3dfx!:)
