Why am I needing to reboot Win98 to get my cable internet to work?

Hi,

I don't know where to post this really, but I'm having a strange problem. If my computer sits idle for a while, my cable internet doesn't work, but if I reboot the system, it works again.

I'm using Windows 98 and I recently upgraded my RAM to 768 mb's of PC133. Could the extra RAM be causing some sort of instability in Windows 98?

At first I thought it was because I was running a mix of Cas2 and Cas3 RAM at Cas2, but I have since changed my settings to Cas3 and I still have the problem.

Any ideas if the extra RAM over 512 mb's could be causing these problems?

TIA,

Sal

Well, memory of that size does cause problems, but probably not this, but fix it and see if it goes away.

You can fix the problem with a fix from microshaft. Go to their knowlege base (support.microsoft.com) and search for something like RAM over 512 in the windows 98 section

If you're just losing your IP, then try running something that will keep some network activity up: an IM program, weather desktop from www.weather.com, etc..

When it stops working, run winipcfg (Start>Run then type 'winipcfg'). Check if your computer has an IP# assingned, if everything else's ok. If it isn't try hittinh "release all" then "renew all". It will get new information from your DHCP server.

You should try calling your ISP, because this seems to be caused by a timeout problem with the DHCP server. Windows 9x waits a little longer for a reply when it's booting than when it's just renewing the information.

Thanks for the replies. I just that this is a problem with the computers network software.

I have 3 systems on a network with a Netgear RT314 router. I just noticed that when I'm listening to mp3's off the other computer networked, I can tell when the system needs to be rebooted because I lose network connection between the two computers and the music stops.

Now.. It's only a problem with the one computer because I don't get any drop offs in service with the other computers.

My guess is that something corrupted the Dial Up Networking when I had AOhell installed temporarily during the Excite/ATT @home debacle. If this is the case, what do I do? Do I deleted everything in Networks and let Windows rebuild everything?

Thanks again,

Sal
