Why am I having such a hard time finding RAM?

Specifics are: 64mb, 72-pin, EDO/ECC, 60ns, SIMM's. Can't even find this configuration at Crucial, OEMPCWORLD, or anywhere I've looked so far!!! I realize this is antiquated stuff here, but give me a break!!! Does ANYBODY handle ECC SIMM's w/ this configuration anymore, or am I in error w/ my configuration? I have not taken one out yet, and I am dreading doing so, as I am a relative newbie in the hardware end of things..... -kd5-

I know this isn't the answer you want to hear, but you will probably get murdered on pricing for ancient RAM. Almost assuredly it would be more cost-effective to upgrade. Perhaps you could describe your system using the profile link, and put a link to your system in your sig, so people could give you some pointers.

If you don't want to bother with all that, could you let us know what's the situation that you need this old RAM?

Also, did you post this to the For Sale/Trade forum?

You got a great bargin there. That is not the typical price for EDO ram.

The buyer can check auction places like Egay and Yahoo auctions, they usually have alot of older EDO ram there. But the price is not cheap anymore.

I have 4 slots, 2 w/ 64mb SIMM's, and 2 empty. It is my understanding that I can add 2 matching 64mb SIMM's without having to remove the existing RAM. I just wanted to upgrade to 256mb. But finding ECC SIMM's is proving more difficult than I originally thought it would..... -kd5-

Kahlon.com has them pretty expensive though $79.99 each the edo no parity is $17.99 each. What motherboard are you using? I have bought from them before great service shipped fedex saver for $5 even though I ordered ground shipping.

Are you sure you need ECC? EDO with ECC was very rare and pretty much only used in servers and much of it was proprietary.

I think bozo1 may be on the right track. You likely don't need ecc, so replacing the existing 128meg of ecc with 256meg of standard memory would make sense. Readily available, and a lot cheaper. Check the manual and the bios. Many older boards would only accept 128meg total, check the compatibility warning on the Kahlon page.

Then recoup part of your expenditure by selling off that rare ecc memory on ebay- might even make a profit. Somebody somewhere actually needs ecc for their board to work right, hopefully it's not you....

Add another $100 to the price of those ecc simms and you could easily have a new case, psu, board, processor and memory- a helluva lot more powerful than whatever you have now. Some upgrades don't make sense.
