Hi guys,
I finished building my computer with the following specs
3.2Ghz P4
P4C800-E Deluxe
1024MB Corsair Twnx
Radeon 9700Pro
74GB 10K rpm Raptors HD
Windows XP pro

Here is the problem, I've been installing softwares that I need. Some installed as they should, but some wouldnt install. In some programs that has a meter showing the progress of the installation, the meter just fills up so fast and then it says "installation completed, please restart your computer"
But after restarting, the software are nowhere to be found in the HDD.

On some other software like WinDVD suite, only WinDVD and WinDVD creator would install, and WinRip wouldn't install.

Can anybody give me pointer on how to resolve this? or why am I having these problem.

Check for Windows updates. I'm sure they've done Windows Installer updates since XP Pro was released.

Does it only fail when installing from a CD? Does it only fail when installing from a drive that is not primary master?

When you installed XP, did you do a complete format and reinstall? Did you apply all the proper drivers and patches before trying to install software? Did you make a strange user account?

I updated it. the last big update was sp2. Both of the software were from CD's. One was from DVD. And I dont think I have strage user account. My only account is the admin account which is only the initial of my name.

any other ideas?

I have a couple suggestions:

  • First, reboot, copy the installation files to the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder, and then run the installation from that location, and tell me if that works.
  • If it didn't, try running Memtest86 on your memory, either from a Memtest86 bootable floppy or CD, your choice. If it comes up with errors, try the instructions I gave to a P4C800 Deluxe owner here to relax your memory timings and raise memory voltage a little bit.
  • Alternately, if you're not very far into this Windows installation, try starting over if you like. Sometimes Windows just gets .
Good luck JD32 :)

Isn't Windows XP SP2 still beta? Either you are mistaken about installing that or that could well be your problem.

I tried changing the setting on the memory as you suggested. No luck. I changed it back to standard for the time being. I didnt get any errors when I use Memtest.. How long should I keep memtest running? I didnt let it run too long. I'm so frustrated over this. any other ideas?
Thanks,

Memtest86 runs in a never-ending loop of tests. If it makes a whole loop with no errors, it reports that it Passed, and starts over. It can take a long time (overnight) to test 1GB of RAM.

Out of curiosity, did you try copying the install files into the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP directory and running them from there? I've had a similar thing happen with Win2000 once in a while, with certain software.

Hi again,
I tried copying the whole DVD to my HDD and installing the softwares from my HDD, but still.. no luck. I'm really getting frustrated here... :(
Could it be a driver I need..? maybe driver for my SATA HDD?
I'll run an overnight test tonite and see how it turns out.
Thanks,

I dont see a reponse to an earlier question, so, Are you using a beta Service pack 2, as it has not been released yet? If you are, you may want to uninstall it and see if that helps.

I've been following this thread since you started it. I have a nagging feeling about chipset drivers etc. Have installed them all properely ?

I was thinking IDE controllers, but you've got SATA, how about those drivers?
